Afghanistan and Zimbabwe have met in two tests so far in Abu Dhabi.

For the first time since 1996, Zimbabwe will host a Boxing Day test match when they host the first test of the two-match series against Afghanistan. It will be followed by their first-ever New Year’s test. Both tests will be played in Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe have hosted only one Boxing Day test in their history, against England in 1996 in Harare. The match ended in a draw as rain had a significant impact on it. They have played two other Boxing Day tests, both away from home – vs New Zealand in Wellington (2000) and vs South Africa in Gqeberha (2017).

Later this year, Afghanistan will take on Zimbabwe in an all-format tour, comprising three T20Is, three ODIs and two test matches from December 9. All six white-ball games will be hosted in Harare and the two tests are slotted for Bulawayo.

Afghanistan and Zimbabwe have previously competed in two test matches, in Abu Dhabi in 2021. Both teams won a game each.

“Boxing Day and New Year’s Test matches are iconic cricket fixtures that we are delighted to be adding to our calendar this festive season and we are looking forward to celebrating in style one of the finest traditions in the sport’s long history,” Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said.

“Before the Test series, scheduled for Bulawayo, we will start off with some T20I and ODI action in Harare to complete a full tour, a clear demonstration of our commitment to improve our game across all formats. Matches between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan are always intense and exciting affairs and we have no doubt the players will once again serve up some great entertainment befitting such an historic tour.”

Afghanistan Cricket Board chairman Mirwais Ashraf said, “The all-format tour to Zimbabwe is a significant event for us. We have a rich history with Zimbabwe, and playing there has always been challenging, but it’s a challenge I believe the Afghan Atalan can face confidently.”
