Delhi captain Ayush Badoni reveals Virat Kohli's batting position on his Ranji Trophy comeback match vs Railways

Virat Kohli is set to play a Ranji Trophy match for the first time since 2012.

Former India captain Virat Kohli will be returning to Ranji Trophy after over 12 years when Delhi will host Railways from January 30 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The BCCI has mandated for the centrally contracted players to participate in domestic cricket whenever they are available.

The likes of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Ravidra Jadeja played in the previous round of matches that started on January 23. But Kohli missed Delhi’s last match due to neck pain.

He is now fit and will turn up for the Delhi vs Railways encounter that is slated to kick off on Thursday.

25-year-old Ayush Badoni, who has an experience of only 13 First-Class matches, is Delhi’s current captain in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25. Kohli will be playing under Badoni.

Badoni has confirmed that Kohli will bat at his usual No. 4 position. He said Kohli has boosted the confidence of the players.

“He will bat at No. 4. He has told us to be positive and express ourselves confidently,” said Badoni, as quoted by PTI.

“I have played against Virat bhaiyya in the IPL. It is an honour that in back to back matches I have now led Rishabh and Virat bhaiyya.”

Kohli has been in a dismal form in recent times. In his last 10 tests, Kohli has averaged only 22, boosted by the century in Perth. He’s managed only two fifty-plus scores in his last 19 innings.

Moreover, the fact that he got out to deliveries outside the off-stump eight times in Australia has been a major concerning factor. Upon returning from Australia, Kohli consulted and worked with former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar for about a week.
