Rajasthan Royals bought the West Indies T20I captain Rovman Powell in opening bid of IPL 2024 auction.

The IPL 2024 auction saw a total of 72 players being picked by the ten IPL franchises. A total of INR 234.50 crore was spent at the event on the players. Rajasthan Royals made the first signing at the event when they went after West Indies T20I captain Rovman Powell. The franchise signed the fewest players among the ten teams.

They bought five players; three were overseas, and two were uncapped Indian players. RR went with the least remaining purse value of INR 14.5 crore. It is because they didn’t release many players. Joe Root, Jason Holder, and Obed McCoy were among the big names released by the RR. They replaced them with Rovman Powell (7.4 crore), Shubham Dubey (5.80 crore), Tom Kohler-Cadmore (40 lakh), Abid Mushtaq (20 lakh), and Nandre Burger (50 lakh).

RR retained the core set of players that played consistently in the last two seasons. They just made some nominal changes to their squad. Looking at their current squad, Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the first-choice openers and will make a dangerous combo. It will be followed by skipper Sanju Samson at No. 3 after the franchise released Devdutt Padikkal.

The pair from West Indies of Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell will add firepower in the middle order. There will be a choice between Dhruv Jurel and Shubham Dubey at No. 6. However, after inventing INR 5.8 crore for Shubham, it looks like he will get the nod. Riyan Parag will be at No. 7 for RR. He will be followed by veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin at No. 8.

Yuzi Chahal will be the second spinner in the team. The pair of Chahal and Ashwin is probably the best spin combo in the tournament. Trent Boult and Prasidh Krishna will be the two pacers in the team. Either Sandeep Sharma, Navdeep Saini, or Kuldeep Sen can also make the team in place of Parag or Shubham.
