Only 13.2 overs were possible on day 1 of the Gabba test.

Day 1 of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 test was significantly impacted by persistent rain in Brisbane as only 13.2 overs of play was possible.

There was 67% probability of precipitation on Saturday in Brisbane and it affected the first day of the Gabba test heavily.

India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first under overcast conditions.

While the match got underway on its scheduled time, rain made its first appearance in the sixth over of Australia’s innings and stopped the action for 30 minutes. 50 minutes later, rain arrived for the second time in the first session and this time it was a proper shower.

No more play was possible in the first session and lunch was called. Rain didn’t relent and the rest of the day was called off.

Australian openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney cautiously negated the 13.2 overs. Both batsmen survived the new ball spells from Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep, before rain intervened. Australia are 28/0 at stumps on day 1 of the Gabba test.

While day 1 of the Gabba test kicked off at 5.50 AM IST, the rest of the four days have a scheduled start time of 5.20 AM IST.

BGT 2024-25: Why day 2 of Gabba test will start at 5:20 IST instead of 5:50 IST?

This is because only 13.2 overs were possible on day 1. So to cover up for the lost overs, the next four days of the test match are scheduled to start 30 minutes prior and also 98 overs can be bowled on each of the four days, provided rain allows for it.
