Virat Kohli registered his second test century at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
On Sunday, at the Optus Stadium in Perth, Virat Kohli broke out of a rut and hit his first test century since July 2023. And this is only his third test ton since 2020, a period in which he’s averaging 32, well below his lofty standards.
Nonetheless, this was a timely ton that was much-needed for Virat Kohli, who had been having a woeful year in test cricket.
What this ton also did was swell India’s lead to 533 runs in the ongoing Perth test that has all but put a loss out of equation.
Kohli came into bat at the score of 275/25 after the top three – Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal – had put India in a commanding position in their second innings and had frustrated the Aussie bowlers for over 80 overs.
Kohli played confident shots right from the onset of his innings and rarely gave the hosts any chances. While he lost Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel for single-digit scores, Kohli found able partners in Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy with whom he made partnerships of 89 (176) and 77* (54) respectively.
Kohli scored 100* off 143 balls with the help of eight fours and two sixes. He brought up his century with a sweep shot boundary, and that also brought India’s declaration. Kohli celebrated animatedly, including giving flying kisses to his wife Anushka Sharma, who was present at the venue.
He said, “Anushka has been right by my side through thick and thin. She knows everything that goes on behind the scenes. Knows what goes on in the head when you’re not performing well. I’m not a guy who hangs around for the sake of it. I take pride in performing for the country.”
Twitter erupted in celebration as Virat Kohli scripted a stunning century in the Perth test:
