Cricketers who took part in IPL 2008 and will also feature in IPL 2024

MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli are among the players to feature in IPL 2008 as well as in IPL 2024.

In 2008 Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced a franchise based system to counter Indian Cricket League and utilise the market sentiments of T20 cricket which was just beginning to take initial strides. The T20 World Cup victory in 2007 and addition of Bollywood helped Indian Premier League grow faster and build itself a big brand in the game.

The Inaugural season of IPL was played in 2008 and this marked the beginning of a journey which helped Indian cricket hugely. There are few constant names in the setup who were part of the opening season of IPL and are also set to take the field in the upcoming IPL 2024 as well. Let’s have a look at the cricketers who took part in the IPL 2008 and will also feature in the IPL 2024 as well.

1. MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) :

MS Dhoni has remained a constant figure in Indian Premier League. Dhoni made his IPL debut with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2008 and then later joined Rising Pune Super Giants when CSK was defunct for two years. He will lead CSK for one last time in IPL 2024.

2. Rohit Sharma (Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians) :

Rohit Sharma started his IPL career with Deccan Chargers and won the title in IPL 2009. Rohit later on moved to Mumbai Indians. Since IPL 2011, he has been part of MI dressing room as one of the crucial members. Rohit has led Mumbai Indians to 5 IPL titles. Rohit Sharma will not be seen as the leader for MI in 2024 season.

3. Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore) :

Virat Kohli was inducted into Royal Challengers Bangalore camp in IPL 2008 after India’s Under-19 World Cup win in Malaysia. Virat Kohli has represented RCB in every single IPL season and remained a constant figure for his side in the league.

4. Ravindra Jadeja (Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings) :

Ravindra Jadeja was termed as rockstar of Indian cricket at the end of IPL 2008. Jadeja was part of India Under 19 World Cup winning side under Virat Kohli. He played for Rajasthan Royals in first three seasons and then moved to Chennai Super Kings. He also played for Gujrat Lions in 2016 and 2017 seasons.

5. Ravichandran Ashwin (Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals) :

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is an IPL product. Ashwin was part of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2008 and in the upcoming IPL 2024 season, he will be representing Rajasthan Royals. Ashwin has also played for Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in between.

6. Shikhar Dhawan (Delhi Daredevils and Punjab Kings) :

Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan is also among the names who saw the beginning of the world’s biggest league closely. Dhawan was part of Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2008 and made his debut in the same season. Shikhar Dhawan currently plays for Punjab Kings as captain of the team. He has been part of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Deccan Chargers and Delhi Capitals.

7. Piyush Chawla (Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians) :

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was also part of the inaugural season of Indian Premier League with Punjab Kings. Piyush is also among the top wicket-takers list in Indian Premier League. Piyush Chawla is currently part of Mumbai Indians team. He was part of KKR and CSK in his stint in IPL.

8. Amit Mishra (Delhi Daredevils and Lucknow Super Giants) :

The 41-year-old leg-spinner Amit Mishra is still going strong in the Indian Premier League. Mishra had a terrific IPL 2023 with Lucknow and will be representing them for one more season in IPL 2024. Mishra made his IPL debut for Delhi Daredevils. He is the fourth highest wicket taker in history of IPL.

9. Manish Pandey (Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders) :

Manish Pandey is the one who opened the century account for Indian batters in Indian Premier League in 2009. Manish Pandey was part of RCB in IPL 2008 and he got another opportunity in the league as KKR successfully bid for him in IPL 2024 auction. He became the first Indian to score a century in IPL which came against Deccan Chargers when Pandey was playing for RCB in 2009.

10. Ajinkya Rahane (Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings) :

Ajinkya Rahane made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2008 and then moved to Rajasthan Royals for a long association with the franchise. Ajinkya Rahane currently plays for Chennai Super Kings in the league. He has also represented KKR and DC in the league so far.

11. Dinesh Karthik (Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore) :

Former Indian wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik is still going strong in Indian Premier League as he will be playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore for one more season. Dinesh Karthik made his IPL debut in 2008 for Delhi Capitals (Daredevils then). Kartik has been part of several franchises like Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings (Previously Kings XI Punjab), Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujrat Lions.

12. Ishant Sharma (Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals) :

Right-arm pacer Ishant Sharma represented Kolkata Knight Riders under Sourav Ganguly in IPL 2008. Ishant had good run with KKR, Deccan Chargers, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Currently he is part of Delhi Capitals. Ishant Sharma has so far played 101 matches and taken 83 wickets in the league’s history.

13. Wriddhiman Saha (Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans) :

Wriddhiman Saha also started his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders under Sourav Ganguly in the first season. Currently he is part of Gujarat Titans setup. Saha is one of the most underrated wicket-keeper batters in Indian Premier League.

14. Rishi Dhawan (Punjab Kings – Previously Kings XI Punjab) :

India’s domestic super star Rishi Dhawan made his IPL debut late in the league but he was part of IPL 2008 with Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab). Apart from two seasons in IPL 2013 and IPL 2017, Dhawan has maintained his association with Punjab Kings. He made his IPL debut in 2013.

15. Swapnil Singh (Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Right-arm pacer from Raebareli was part of Mumbai Indians camp in the IPL 2008 but didn’t get a chance to play. Now, Swapnil Singh is part of Royal Challengers Bangalore squad for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
