These players have made a significant impact in the sport, and their farewell on the global stage stirs a mix of emotions in fans, combining both sadness and happiness.
Now let’s delve into the list of cricketers who will retire after ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
1 – Quinton de Kock:
On September 5, 2023, Quinton De Kock, South African wicket-keeper batter, delivered a surprising announcement of retiring from one-day international cricket. The ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 will serve as his final assignment in one-day international cricket. It’s worth noting that, despite being just 30 years old, De Kock had already bid farewell to test cricket following India series in December 2021. Now, he has made the decision to draw the curtain on his one-day international career, leaving only T20I cricket as the format through which he will continue to represent his country, in the international stage.
“I am not going to sit here and deny that it doesn’t. It helps with my decision. I’ve been around for 10 or 11 years, and I’ve tried to keep my loyalty to the team, which I think I’ve done really well. I think I have represented the Proteas badge very well over my career,” he expressed. Speaking about T20 events, De Kock continued, “T20 events I am not going to deny that there is a lot of money, and coming to the end of your career, guys want to get their final top-up before their career finishes. Any normal person would do it anyway. If I were really not that loyal, I would have done it five years ago, when it really took off. Now that I am older and with me coming to the downslope of my career, it’s time,” he explained to ESPNcricinfo.
What’s particularly astonishing about De Kock’s retirement is the timing. Since making this decision, he has been in exceptional form during the World Cup. In just seven matches, he has already notched up an impressive record of four centuries and a total of 545 runs. De Kock has so far scored 6721 runs in 152 ODIs with an average of 46.35 and a brisk strike rate of 96.92. He has recorded an impressive 20 centuries and 30 half-centuries in his ODI career.
2 – Naveen Ul Haq:
On September 27th, 2023, Naveen Ul Haq, a prominent member of Afghanistan’s World Cup squad, revealed a significant decision regarding his future in the 50-overs format. He had already made this choice even before the tournament commenced. The pacer announced his retirement from ODI cricket, effective at the end of the World Cup. However, he will continue to represent his country in T20Is.
Despite being just 24 years old, Naveen explained that while it wasn’t an easy decision, he believes it will ultimately help him extend his playing career. “It has been an absolute honor to represent my country. I would like to announce my retirement from the ODI format at the end of this World Cup and will continue to wear this blue jersey in t20 cricket for my country. It hasn’t been an easy decision to make, but to prolong my playing career, I had to take this tough decision. I would like to thank the Afghanistan Cricket Board. And all my fans for their support and unwavering love,” he wrote on his Instagram.
During the current World Cup, Naveen has shined and picked six wickets in six matches. Over the course of his 13-match ODI career, he has notched up a total of 20 wickets while maintaining an economy of 6.11.
3 – David Willey:
On November 1, 2023, England’s 33-years-old all-rounder, David Willey, announced his retirement from international cricket. He will retire after the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. This announcement came at a challenging time for the defending champions, as they currently find themselves at the bottom of the standings with just two points after six league games. Willey’s retirement is closely tied to England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) not extending a central contract for the 2023–24 cycle, marking the end of his international career.
In a statement released by ECB, David Willey was quoted as saying, “I never wanted this day to come. As a young boy, I’ve only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England. With careful consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all formats of international cricket at the end of the World Cup.” David Willey further said, “I have worn the shirt with immense pride and given my absolute all to the badge on my chest. I am sure everybody who knows me does not doubt that, whatever my involvement in the remainder of this campaign, I will give everything and more. That’s the only way I know.”
David Willey began his international career in the ODI format against Ireland in May 2015. Over his successful international career, he’s participated in 70 ODIs and 43 T20Is, claiming 94 ODI wickets and 51 T20I wickets. His journey started back in June 2015 with a T20I debut against New Zealand at Old Trafford. In the current 2023 World Cup, he has played a key role for England, taking five wickets in three matches.
