Former captain Dean Elgar scored 235 runs in the last test series against India in 2021-22.

Former South African red-ball skipper Dean Elgar is considering the test retirement after the upcoming two-match test series against India. Dean Elgar was South Africa’s hero in India’s last tour in 2021-22. India will be up against South Africa to breach their final frontier later in December. The two-match test series will begin at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Boxing Day. Elgar was recently replaced as the test skipper earlier this year.

India are yet to win a test series against South Africa. They started well on their last tour but fell short by a margin of 1-2. India lost the final two test matches after winning the opening game in Centurion. South African opener Dean Elgar, who was also the leader of the squad played a magnificent part for the Proteas in the three-match Test series and continued their dominance against India. Dean Elgar scored 235 runs at an average of 47 in 6 innings.

Dean Elgar to announce retirement?

According to a few reports from South African local media, Dean Elgar considers himself out of current coach Shukri Conrad’s plan for the future. South African local newspaper Rapport reported through a source, “Just expect the news [of his retirement] to break soon.” Dean Elgar will be having further talks with Cricket South Africa regarding his future in test cricket. Elgar was expected to lead the South African side in the upcoming NZ tour but the board is still unsure.

South African opener Dean Elgar led the South African side in 17 test matches from 2017 to 2023 and won 9 test matches. South Africa lost 7 out of the 17 tests Elgar led. South Africa defeated India 2-1 in their previous test series played in 2021-22. Virat Kohli resigned from test captaincy after a disappointing loss against the Proteas. Elgar scored two half-centuries in that series.

The first T20I between India and South Africa on Sunday was washed out due to the incessant rain in Durban. The second T20I between the two teams will be played at Port Elizabeth on 12th December. The final T20I of the series will be played at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on 14th December. After the T20I series, a three-match ODI series will be played starting on 17th December. The test series will begin on Boxing Day in Centurion.
