England will face Netherlands in match No. 40 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Wednesday.

England won the 2019 World Cup at home and were looking pretty good to defend their title in India in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. But what happened in the tournament was totally a shock for them. England had the worst performance ever in a World Cup edition, and they have been eliminated from the competition.

In the seven games they have played so far, they have only won one match, which came against Bangladesh. Not just in this tournament, they are also on the verge of missing out on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. They will face Netherlands in the next game on Wednesday at the MCA Stadium in Pune, which is a do-or-die contest in contrast to ICC Champions Trophy 2025 qualification. Here we will talk about the predicted playing XI for England.

ENG vs NED: England’s Predicted playing XI vs Netherlands

1. Jonny Bairstow :

Jonny Bairstow has been one of the best white-ball openers in modern-day cricket. But he hasn’t taken any form in this tournament. In seven games, he has scored 141 runs at 20.14, which is below his standards. He will be keen to make an impact in last few games and win games for his team.

2. Dawid Malan :

Dawid Malan is the highest run-scorer for England in this tournament. Malan has scored 286 runs at an average of 40.85 so far and will be the big wicket at the top because he can take the innings deep and then unleash with some big shots.

3. Joe Root :

Two half-centuries in the first two innings and then nothing in the next five, these are the stats of Joe Root, which is a major concern for England. Root has always been a match-winner and scores tons of runs, but that has been missing in this tournament. He has only scored 29 runs in last five innings. But with weaker opponents, he will look to gain confidence and score some runs.

4. Ben Stokes :

Ben Stokes was the top-scorer for England in the last game against Australia, but he couldn’t take his team home. He has made 112 runs in four innings but he has been the match-winner over the years across formats, and this has been a poor tournament for him. With not much to lose, Stokes might come even harder against Netherlands and is expected to deliver a good performance.

5. Jos Buttler (c & wk) :

Jos Buttler has been the biggest failure for England. The captain has not even scored anything in this tournament, which is the major reason for England’s failure. He has scored 106 runs at an average of 15.14. He will have all these things in mind and will look to deliver a captain’s knock with the bat.

6. Moeen Ali :

Just like other English players, Moeen Ali has also struggled so far. He has scored 81 runs in four games and hasn’t picked up anything with the ball. In Indian conditions, he was expected to do well, which he has lacked. Hence, the all-rounder will look to finish on top and deliver some impactful performances in the remaining games.

7. Liam Livingstone :

With not many batters doing well in the top-order, Liam Livingstone has always come when quick wickets fall, which is why he hasn’t been able to play his natural game. But the world knows how destructive he can be and can turn the game around in a span of a few overs. He will look to do something similar and win it for England on Wednesday.

8. Chris Woakes :

Chris Woakes has looked good in the last couple of games, but it has been too late for his team. He has taken eight wickets in six games but will feel confident going forward in Pune. Woakes will get help with the new ball, which will make him a challenging bowler to face for Netherlands on Wednesday.

9. David Willey :

David Willey has been pretty decent so far for England. In four games, he has scored 57 runs and taken six wickets with the ball. Willey will get some help in Pune, and if England bowl second, then he will be a challenging pacer. He uses his left-arm angle pretty well, and will be dangerous against Netherlands’ top-order.

10. Adil Rashid :

Adil Rashid is the only bowler for England who has done a decent job so far. Though he hasn’t had many wickets that he would have liked, he has restricted the batters in the middle overs. Rashid has taken 10 wickets so far at an impressive economy rate of 4.92, and he will get a purchase in Pune, which will make him an even more difficult prospect to handle.

11. Mark Wood :

Mark Wood is the fastest bowler going around, but his speed becomes wayward sometimes, and he leaks runs. But despite his past performances so far, he can be a challenging bowler to face for those batters who are not comfortable playing 150 clicks. Wood can create havoc and rattle any batter with the pace he has. And his balls will skid on the slow surface of Pune.
