IPL 2024 auction: Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka finds no buyers
Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka played for Gujrat Titans in IPL 2023.
Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka is back on the cricket field after missing out on the latter half of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 due to an injury. Dasun Shanaka once again had a major setback as he went unsold in IPL mini-auction 2024 in Dubai. Shanaka joined IPL 2023 as an injury replacement when Gujarat Titans’ overseas star Kane Williamson got injured in his first game for the franchise tournament’s curtain raiser.
Sri Lankan skipper remained unsold in the previous auction as well but a powerful recent performance in international cricket was not enough for him to get an IPL contract. Dasun Shanka is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest match-winners currently and he is widely credited for making Sri Lanka champions of Asia Cup 2022 in T20 format. Shanka also took his team to the finals of Asia Cup 2023 before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Dasun Shanaka unsold in IPL 2024
Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka entered IPL 2024 auction at a base price of 50 lakhs, and remained unsold for the second successive season of IPL. Shanaka could not make any impact in his short 3-match stay with Gujarat Titans and failed to attract any buyers in the mini-auction.
Dasun Shanaka in the IPL previously
Coming in as a replacement for Kane Williamson, Dasun Shanaka played only three games for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023. After remaining unsold in the IPL 2023 auction, Shanaka had an opportunity to leave an impact on franchises for the future but he didn’t have many chances in the playing XI. He played only three games for the Titans and scored 26 runs. Shanaka didn’t get an opportunity to bowl in his debut season for Gujarat.
He made his IPL debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. Dasun Shanaka batted at number 7 for Titans and scored an unbeaten 9 runs in 7 balls. He will be looking to turn things around this time as he will have a price tag to deal with and will be looking to prove his worth in cricket’s richest T20 League. Shanaka recently suffered a thigh injury during the World Cup 2023.
