IPL 2024: Why Delhi Capitals (DC) will play their home games in Vishakapatnam instead of Delhi

Delhi Capitals will play their first two home games of IPL 2024 in Vishakapatnam.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced schedule for first phase of upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). 21 matches will be played in the first 15 days of the IPL 2024. Rest of the schedule will be released after a discussion with Government authorities.. India will also be voting for the 18th term of Lok Sabha & General Elections are likely to begin from second week of April.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will play the curtain raiser clash of the upcoming season at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on 22nd March. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals (DC) will begin their campaign against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on 23rd March in Mohali and then they will play their first home game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on 31st March in Vishakapatnam.

Visakhapatnam has been added as the home venue of Delhi Capitals for the first phase of IPL 2024. The first phase of IPL 2024 will be played from 22nd March to 7th April.

Why Visakhapatnam will host Delhi Capitals home game?

Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi will host the final leg of the second season of Women’s Premier League (WPL 2024). Delhi will host 11 games including Eliminator and Final of the WPL 2024. The Authorities are not sure whether the ground will be ready to play IPL games in just 10 days duration or not. Considering WPL and IPL’s schedule, Delhi Capitals chose Visakhapatnam as their home venue for the first phase.

The BCCI informed while releasing the schedule that choosing Vizag as home venue was completely Delhi Capitals’ call. As quoted by Cricbuzz, a BCCI official informed, “We felt it necessary to allow the ground some respite following the WPL matches.” It is likely that Delhi will be hosting rest of the home games as the authorities will get ample amount of time to make the stadium ready for big IPL action.

Delhi Capitals will play against Chennai Super Kings on 31st March and Kolkata Knight Riders on 3rd April at the Dr. YSR ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Delhi Capitals will open their campaign against Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Mohali on 23rd March. Rishabh Pant’s participation will be the biggest talking point in Delhi Capitals camp. They had a poor IPL 2023 and finished ninth in the points table.
