"They'll risk injury…" BCCI secretary Jay Shah breaks silence on Rohit-Kohli absence from Duleep Trophy 2024-25 squads

Jay Shah said that the board needs to treat the players with respect.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah opened up on senior cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s absence from the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024-25 squads.

On August 14, 2024, the BCCI announced the squads of four teams for the first round of the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 tournament.

The Duleep Trophy will begin on September 5 in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and Bengaluru. As expected, regular Indian cricketers KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer, and many more, have been added to the squads for the upcoming domestic tournament.

However, senior Indian cricketers Rohit and Kohli were not included in the Duleep Trophy squads.

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah has finally revealed the reason behind exclusion of Rohit and Kohli from the Duleep Trophy squads.

BCCI secretary Shah stated that the selectors didn’t want to risk injuries to senior batters Rohit and Kohli, who are very important for the side given India have a long test season coming up. Shah further gave example of Australia and England, where every international player doesn’t play domestic cricket.

“Apart from them (Rohit and Kohli), everyone else is playing. You should appreciate that. One must note than Ishan Kishan and Sheryas Iyer are playing in the Buchi Babu Tournament. We should not insist on players like Rohit And Virat to play in the Duleep Trophy. They will risk injury. If you’ve noticed, in Australia and England, every international player doesn’t play domestic cricket. We have to treat the players with respect,” said Shah.

Team A: Shubman Gill (C), Mayank Agarwal, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, KL Rahul, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Tanush Kotian, Kuldeep Yadav, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan, Vidwath Kaverappa, Kumar Kushagra, Shaswat Rawat.

Team B: Abhimanyu Easwaran (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant, Musheer Khan, Nitish Kumar Reddy*, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd Siraj, Yash Dayal, Mukesh Kumar, Rahul Chahar, R Sai Kishore, Mohit Awasthi, N Jagadeesan (WK).

Note: Nitish Kumar Reddy’s participation in the Duleep Trophy tournament is subject to fitness.

Team C: Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, Abishek Porel (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, B Indrajith, Hrithik Shokeen, Manav Suthar, Umran Malik, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Anshul Khamboj, Himanshu Chauhan, Mayank Markande, Aryan Juyal (WK), Sandeep Warrier.

Team D: Shreyas lyer (C), Atharva Taide, Yash Dubey, Devdutt Padikkal, Ishan Kishan (WK), Ricky Bhui, Saransh Jain, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Aditya Thakare, Harshit Rana, Tushar Deshpande, Akash Sengupta, KS Bharat (WK), Saurabh Kumar.

Note: Cricketers who will be selected for the upcoming home test series against Bangladesh will be replaced in the Duleep Trophy.
