Kane Williamson scored 138 runs in two tests in the Sri Lanka tour.

Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson’s test tour of Sri Lanka came to an end on a grim note as he managed to score 138 runs in four innings across two tests.

His highest score in four outings was 54 and fell short of a second half-century on the tour by four runs in New Zealand’s second innings in the second test.

However, Williamson managed to take one positive out of his last innings – he overtook Indian superstar Virat Kohli’s tally of runs in test cricket.

Kane Williamson goes past Virat Kohli on the test runs chart

During his knock of 46 runs in Galle on Saturday, Williamson went past Kohli’s tally of 8871 runs test runs. The Kiwi batter finished this series with 8881 runs and now is the 19th-highest run-scorer in test cricket history. Williamson is already New Zealand’s leading test run-scorer.

Kohli will have a chance to overtake Williamson in the ongoing Kanpur test against Bangladesh.

These two batting greats will then go head to head in a three-match test series in India, starting on October 16. India will host New Zealand for three tests, which will be played in Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai.

Meanwhile, talking about the second SL vs NZ test in Galle, the hosts are in control of the game. At stumps on day 3, New Zealand are trailing by 315 runs in their second innings and have five wickets in hand.

Sri Lanka piled up 602 runs in their first innings through centuries from Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis. Then, Prabath Jayasuriya and Nishan Peiris ran through New Zealand’s batting line-up to bowl them out for only 88 runs.

The hosts enforced the follow-on, asking the visitors to bat again. The Lankan spinners took five wickets before early stumps were called due to bad light.
