Australian wicket-keeper batter Matthew Wade had officially retired from international cricket. Wade has decided to pull the curtains on his 13-year-long career that saw him represent Australia in 225 games across formats.
Matthew Wade made his debut in October 2011 and played 36 tests, 97 ODIs and 92 T20Is. Wade also played a crucial role in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup-winning campaign.
Matthew Wade’s last appearance for Australia came during the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. Known for his grit and power-hitting ability, Wade has been an integral part of Australia’s limited-overs team.
Matthew Wade’s decision to retire
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Wade said, “I was fully aware my international days were most likely over at the end of the last T20 World Cup. My international retirement and coaching has been a constant conversation with George [Bailey] and Andrew [McDonald] over the past six months.”
Wade expressed gratitude for the support he’s received throughout his career, saying, “I enjoyed the ride as challenging as it can be at the international level. Without good people around me, I would have never got as much out of myself as I did.”
A new chapter in coaching
Wade will join Australia’s coaching staff for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan under head coach Andre Borovec, followed by the ODI series beginning in Melbourne next week.
Speaking on his next career path, Wade said, “Coaching has been on my radar over the last few years, and thankfully some great opportunities have come my way.“
Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley praised Wade’s contributions, welcoming his addition to the coaching staff. “I’m delighted he will add to his massive contribution by coaching the next generation of stars and also continuing to light up the Big Bash with the Hobart Hurricanes.”
Wade confirmed that he will continue to play domestic cricket with Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.
