BCCI has appointed former South Africa bowler Morne Morkel as Team India’s bowling coach.

On August 14, 2024, former South African speedster Morne Morkel was appointed as the new bowling coach of the senior men’s Indian cricket team.

The development was confirmed by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah. “Yes, Morne Morkel has been appointed bowling coach of the senior India men’s team,” Shah told as quoted by PTI.

Interestingly, India head coach Gautam Gambhir and Morne Morkel have shared the dressing room as coaching staff with each other in the past.

Gambhir and Morkel were associated with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for two years. Gambhir was the mentor, whereas Morkel was the bowling coach of the LSG franchise in the Indian Premier League.

When will Morne Morkel join the Indian squad as bowling coach?

The Indian cricket team are all set to host Bangladesh for a two-match test series and a three-match T20I series in September and October.

The two-match test series will kick off on September 19, whereas the three-match T20I series between India and Bangladesh will be played from October 6 to 12.

Ahead of the Bangladesh tests and T20I series, BCCI secretary Jay Shah revealed the date when Morkel will be taking over as the bowling coach.

BCCI secretary Shah confirmed that Morkel will be joining the Indian camp from September 1 ahead of the Bangladesh series.

“Morne Morkel will be joining the squad on September 1,” Jay Shah told The Times of India.

The former South African speedster was also the bowling coach of the Pakistan cricket team during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Morkel resigned from the post before his contract was due to expire with the Men in Green.

The 39-year-old Morkel played 86 tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is for the South African cricket team. The right-arm speedster picked a total of 544 international wickets.
