MS Dhoni also named his former teammate Yuvraj Singh in his dream batting unit.

Despite retiring from international cricket in August 2020, MS Dhoni is still an active participant in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and keeps on thrilling his fans. During his stint as captain of the Indian Cricket Team, he led many legends under his leadership and also developed youngsters with his guidance.

Notably, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were two pillars of Indian batting during MS Dhoni’s captaincy stint in the later half. After Dhoni decided to step down as captain, Kohli took over the reigns before Rohit Sharma took over and guided India to two ICC titles in 2024 and 2025.

I would stick to my Indian players: MS Dhoni on his best top-order batsmen

Dhoni recently appeared in a Podcast with popular Youtuber Raj Shamani. During the show, the host asked Dhoni about his dream batting unit. The former CSK skipper named Indian legends like Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sourav Ganguly. Notably, the trio helped Team India to reach the final of ICC ODI World Cup 2003 and are among the best batters to ever play for Team India.

“I would stick to my Indian players, Viru pa (Virender Sehwag) opening the innings. So Viru pa, Sachin, Dada (Sourav Ganguly). Because, you know, the thing is, imagine everyone at their prime. And the beauty is when you see them playing, you will feel there’s nobody better. But cricket is a game of ups and downs. So it becomes very difficult to pick, but growing up we have all seen these players perform,” Dhoni said.

Dhoni also mentioned his former teammate Yuvraj Singh in his list. However, he also added that instead of picking anyone, he would like to enjoy everyone. Singh was Player of the Tournament of ICC ODI World Cup 2011, which India won under the then captain, Dhoni.

“You know when Yuvi (Yuvraj) was hitting six sixes, you’d say you don’t want to watch anyone else. So, the thing is, why I should pick anyone? Why can’t I just enjoy everyone? You know, they all contributed for India. You know, they all made sure that we win many tournaments wherever we are playing,” he said.

Interestingly, Dhoni overlooked Sharma or Kohli while answering the question. India ODI and test skipper Rohit Sharma holds the record of highest ever individual score in ODIs (264). Kohli holds the record of most ODI centuries (51) to his name.

Meanwhile, Dhoni is currently busy in IPL 2025 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). His team has struggled to excel in the initial games, winning just one game out of four under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership.
