Punjab Kings bought Shreyas Iyer for INR 26.75 crores in IPL 2025 mega auction.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction was historic in many ways. The two-day event saw Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer become the two most expensive players in the IPL history with their auction prices of INR 27 crores and INR 26.75 crores respectively.

Having released Pant before the mega auction, Delhi Capitals (DC) came with the clear intention of acquiring one marquee Indian name in the auction.

While the Capitals splurge INR 14 crores on KL Rahul, they also strengthened their squad with other key inclusions like Harry Brook, Jake Fraser McGurk, Tristan Stubbs and Mitchell Starc.

DC’s squad now has a nice blend of experienced and young players with exciting names like Abhishek Porel and Ashutosh Sharma joining senior players Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.

Despite DC’s good performance in the auction, one move that drew attention was their attempt to bring back Shreyas Iyer. Delhi bid for Iyer till INR 26.5 crore and then tapped out, allowing PBKS to take Iyer for 26.75 crore.

Parth Jindal, co-owner of the team, has recently shared his thoughts on the bidding war for Iyer.

Parth Jindal shared insights on Shreyas Iyer bid

Speaking about the Iyer bidding, Jindal explained how the process became emotionally charged for him as the prices got higher.

Jindal told ESPNcricinfo, “By the end of it, I think the emotion had taken over strategy. It was madness by the end of it. It would’ve spoiled our whole auction if we had landed either of those players (Shreyas or Pant) at those prices.

Jindal clarified that the team had a clear budget and hence he had to withdraw from the bidding war with PBKS for Iyer.

He continued, “We were very clear that between the three of them (Shreyas, Pant and Rahul), we needed to get one. So we went all the way for Shreyas. Frankly, it (Shreyas’ bid) went a bit too high and I think my reaction was very visible on the table – it (the bid) had crossed all budgets.
