From Richard Madley to Mallika Sagar - Ranking the IPL auctioneers over years

There have been only four IPL auctioneers in 17 years of the league’s history.
Indian Premier League came into existence in 2008, and it was one of its first. IPL changed the dynamics of the game, it offered something different that had never happened before. It introduced the auction model, where IPL franchises bought the players with the highest bid. And when it comes to auction, one always needs an auctioneer.
So far, 17 IPL auctions have taken place. And the most recent one was conducted by Mallika Sagar, who became the first lady auctioneer in IPL history. So far, four individuals have conducted IPL auction, and two of them are Indians. So we will talk about all four IPL auctioneers here.
Here’s the ratings for IPL auctioneers over the years:
1. Richard Madley (9/10) :

Richard Madley was the first auctioneer at IPL event. He was part of the first season in 2008 and sold MS Dhoni. He is the president of Christie’s East and the one who sold MS Dhoni to Chennai Super Kings. He was part of the first 11 seasons from 2008 to 2018, and almost every big name that played in IPL went under his hammer. He became the face of IPL auction and was certainly a joy to watch.
2. Hugh Edmeades (7/10) :

Hugh Edmeades was the successor of Richard Madley, who took the auctioneer’s duty in 2018. Edmeades is a British auctioneer; he even conducted the auction for 2023 season. He was the centre of attention in the mega auction held in 2022. He collapsed on stage during the event in 2022. But overall, he was a treat to watch for the fans.
3. Charu Sharma (6/10) :

Famous Indian commentator, compere, and quizmaster, Charu Sharma, took charge of the auction during the two-day event in 2022. He came in as the replacement for Hugh Edmeades after he collapsed on the floor during the event. Charu handled it pretty well. He was also the CEO of RCB in the inaugural season, serving as a director of Pro Kabaddi League.
4. Mallika Sagar (8.5/10) :

Mallika Sagar made history when she became the first female auctioneer to conduct IPL auction. She was the auctioneer during the two seasons of Women’s Premier League, which made IPL governing committee promote her as IPL auctioneer for 2024 edition, and she did a remarkable job. The 48-year-old has been working in this industry for 20 years now and is an integral part of Pro Kabaddi League. Overall, she was pretty smooth with the auction activities at IPL 2024 auction.
