Shafali Verma scored 205 runs against South Africa in the first innings of one-off test in Chennai on June 28

It was a historic day for the young Indian batter Shafali Verma as she smashed her maiden test double century in one-off test match against the South Africa women’s team at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on June 28. 

Indian openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana displayed brutality against South Africa’s good bowling line-up. The Indian openers stitched the opening stand of 292 runs and recorded the highest ever partnership for the opening wicket in women’s test cricket history.

The stylish batter Mandhana departed after scoring 149 runs in 161 balls, including 27 boundaries and one six. However, the day belonged to her opening partner Shafali, who unleashed her beast mode and showcased her class at a very young. The 20-year-old batter smashed her maiden double century in just 194 deliveries. Shafali’s fantastic innings came to an end in the 75th over of the first innings when a poor call from Jemimah Rodrigues cost her wicket. Shafali was adjudged run out, and she departed after a stunning knock of 205 runs in just 197 balls, which included 23 boundaries and eight sixes.

During the innings, Shafali hit the fastest hundred and double hundred in women’s test cricket and also achieved a few more records, which we will talk about here.

1. Fastest century in women’s test cricket

In the first innings, Shafali smashed her maiden test ton in just 113 deliveries against South African women. 113-ball ton by Shafali is now the fastest century ever in women’s test cricket. The record was previously held by England’s Janette Brittin, who scored a 137-ball hundred against Australia in Perth in 1984.

2. Fastest double century in women’s test cricket

Few hours after breaking the record of fastest century in women’s test cricket, the Indian opener Shafali also shattered the record of fastest double century in women’s test cricket.

Shafali broke the record of Australia’s Annabel Sutherland record, who previously smashed a 248-ball double century against South Africa women earlier this year.

3. Second Indian and overall 10th batter to hit 200 in women’s test cricket

Shafali Verma joined Mithali Raj in the elusive list of Indian batters to hit a double century in women’s test cricket. She became second Indian and overall 10th batter to hit a double century in women’s test cricket. Out of 10, five double centuries belong to Australian women.

4. Most sixes hit in an innings in women’s test cricket (8)

Shafali, during her historic knock of 205 runs, also shattered the record of most maximums hit in an innings in women’s test cricket. Shafali hammered a total of eight sixes during her stay at the crease. Moreover, Shafali also holds the record of hitting most sixes in women’s tests (13).

5. Highest opening partnership in women’s tests

The Indian opening pair of Shafali and Smriti Mandhana achieved the historic milestone of the highest opening stand in women’s test cricket.

The duo stitched a 292-run partnership for the first wicket and broke the record of Pakistan women Kiran Baluch and Sajjida Shah’s, who stitched a 241-run stand against the West Indies women in March 2004.

6. Highest partnership for any wicket by India in women’s tests

The aggressive duo of Mandhana and Verma notched up a brilliant 292-run opening stand against South Africa on June 28.

With this, the duo shattered the record of Thirush Kamini and Punam Raut, who previously registered the highest partnership for India in the women’s test. Kamini and Raut stitched a crucial stand of 275 runs against the Proteas in 2014, which came for the second wicket.
