Tom Curran has been handed a 4-match ban in the ongoing BBL 2023-24.

The IPL 2024 auction saw a number of cricketers get IPL contracts. Some got some career-changing deals, while others were bought for the base price. The Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Tom Curran, who is an English all-rounder and the elder brother of last season’s costliest player Sam Curran, at his base price of INR 1.5 crore. Tom will be making his IPL comeback after the 2021 edition.

He has played 13 IPL matches and scored 127 runs and taken 13 wickets as well. He will be part of the RCB setup in the coming season. However, he has made headlines for an unwanted reason. Tom is currently playing in the ongoing Big Bash League 13 in Australia and representing the Sydney Sixers. The all-rounder has been banned for four matches in the BBL 2023–24.

Here’s why Tom Curran has been banned for four matches in the BBL 2023-24

A video is circulating on social media featuring Tom Curran that has cleared a lot of things. This incident took place ahead of the last match for the Sixers on December 11 against the Hobart Hurricanes in Launceston. The all-rounder was seen taking a practice run as a drill on the pitch and running onto the pitch. An umpire asked him not to step onto the pitch.

Watch the video here:

However, the pacer ignored him and ran towards the umpire. Hence, to avoid the collision, the umpire had to step aside. The match referee, Bob Parry, found Tom Curran guilty of breaching the Cricket Australia code of conduct and charged Curran under Article 2.17 for “intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire,” which led to a four-match ban for the 28-year-old.

In the video, it is clearly heard that the umpire asked him not to run into the pitch, and despite the warning, Tom did it deliberately. Hence, the all-rounder will not feature in the coming four games for his team, including the coming game on Friday against the Adelaide Strikers. However, the head of the Sydney Sixers has confirmed that they will challenge this decision, and Tom didn’t intimidate the match official intentionally.
