Lockie Ferguson became the second bowler to achieve this feat in T20Is.

Lockie Ferguson of New Zealand reached a new high by bowling four maidens in a row against Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy Ground in Trinidad & Tobago on Monday in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

New Zealand have already been knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024, but are playing for pride against Papua New Guinea. New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first in their final T20 World Cup group stage game.

New Zealand were eliminated from the T20 World Cup as Afghanistan defeated Papua New Guinea by seven wickets, making this the first ICC World Cup since 2014 in which the Kiwis did not reach the semi-finals.

Their demise could not have been more humiliating, as Afghanistan thrashed them by 75 runs before the West Indies triumphed by 13 runs.

This game is also the final match for Trent Boult in the T20 World Cups. Ahead of the game, Trent Boult had said that this game will be his swansong at the ICC events in the shortest format in international cricket.

Lockie Ferguson creates history by bowling four maidens in a T20I game; first in T20 World Cup history

Meanwhile, Lockie Ferguson decided to make history in Boult’s final T20 World Cup game. He bowled his full quota of four overs without conceding a single run. He bowled four maidens on the trot and picked three wickets in those 24 dot balls.

Ferguson took three key wickets during his session, becoming the only player in tournament history to accomplish this remarkable accomplishment.

Ferguson was introduced in the fifth over of PNG’s innings after Kane Williamson chose to bowl in the rain-delayed match at Tarouba. He took a wicket with his first ball of the encounter, dismissing captain Assad Vala for six.

Ferguson’s pace posed considerable issues for the PNG hitters, who were out of place against far superior opponents in New Zealand. During his fourth over, there were two runs scored off the third ball, but they were given leg-byes, meaning the runs weren’t added to Ferguson’s final figures.

Ferguson became only the second bowler in T20I history to accomplish this feat; Canada’s Saad Bin Zafar was the first to deliver four maidens in a T20I. He accomplished this accomplishment in a T20 World Cup qualifier against Panama in 2021.

The Twitterverse went wild praising Lockie Ferguson for his record feat.
