Usman Khawaja stressed on Steve Smith’s batting position in test cricket.

Australian opener Usman Khawaja has suggested the best batting position for his teammate Steve Smith in test cricket.

Following David Warner’s retirement from international cricket, Smith, who was originally batting at the fourth position in Australia’s playing XI, has been moved up the order to open the innings for his side in the longest format.

Since becoming opener, Smith has failed to replicate his success that he got while batting at No. 4 spot in tests.

The 35-year-old has played four matches as an opener and scored only 171 runs at an average of 28.50 till now. The veteran batter scored just one fifty in his new role.

Smith played a fighting knock of 91* runs against the West Indies in Brisbane, which showed his potential as an opener.

I love seeing Smith come in at No. 4: Usman Khawaja

Recently, Australia’s test specialist Usman Khawaja, expressed his thoughts regarding Smith’s batting position. The left-handed batter suggested Smith to bat at fourth position for Australia in tests.

The 35-year-old Smith has played 67 tests till now at fourth position for the Australian cricket team. The right-handed batter has amassed 5966 runs at an impressive average of 61.50. The senior batter has smashed 19 centuries and 26 half centuries while batting at fourth position in the longest format.

“I’m not sure what the top six is going to be this summer. I’ve always loved Steve Smith batting at No. 4, I haven’t shied away from that. I love seeing him come in at No. 4 … you get two wickets, and who do you get walking in? The best batsman in the world. When you put him up to open, I feel like you’re kind of giving them a chance to get at him early,” Usman Khawaja said to Fox Cricket.
