Yashasvi Jaiswal becomes 8th Indian player to win "Man of the Match" award on test debut

Yashasvi Jaiswal registered the third-highest individual score by an Indian batter on Test debut.

It was a dream debut for Yashasvi Jaiswal in white for Team India. The visitors registered a comprehensive win over the West Indies in the first test at Windsor Park, Dominica. India won the game within three days and registered a win by an innings and 141 runs. The star of the game was the young Mumbai batter, who scored a century on his debut and became only the third Indian opener to score a debut ton.

India had a clinical performance with both bat and ball. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma smashed his tenth century and made 103 runs. Virat Kohli also looked good for his 76-run knock. On the other hand, veteran off-spinner Ravi Ashwin made a big statement and picked up 12 wickets in the game. He took 5/60 in the first innings then followed it up with a 7/71 in the second innings.

With his century on his debut, Yashasvi Jaiswal made some remarkable records. Notably, he became only the third opener after Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw to score a debut century. Overall, he is the 17th Indian batter to achieve this special record. The left-hander also registered the third-highest score by an Indian batter on test debut. He made 171 runs, including 16 fours and one six. Dhawan (187) and Rohit (177) are ahead of him.

Yashasvi Jaiswal also won the Man of the Match award for his superb debut ton. With this, he joined an elite list of Indian players with a MOTM on Test debut. He is only the eighth Indian batter to achieve this rare feat. Jaiswal is behind Pravin Amre (1992 vs South Africa), RP Singh (2006 vs Pakistan), Ravi Ashwin (2011 vs West Indies), Shikhar Dhawan (2023 vs Australia), Rohit Sharma (2013 vs West Indies), Prithvi Shaw (2018 vs West Indies), Shreyas Iyer (2021 vs New Zealand).

Speaking of the game, India dismissed the West Indies for just 150 runs in the first innings. Both Indian openers added 229 runs for the first wicket. India declared their first inning at 421/5 and dismissed the hosts for 130 runs in the second innings to win the game by an innings and 141 runs. The second match will start on July 20 (Thursday) at the Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.
