AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023: Fixtures, Format, Telecast and more

The competition kicks off on the 15th of June.

The AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 will be the 19th edition of the biennial international youth football championship organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). This edition will be the first since 2006 to be played as an U-17 tournament, as the AFC proposed to switch the tournament from U-16 to U-17 starting from 2023. 

The 2023 AFC U-17 Asian Cup will be played from the 15th of June to the 2nd of July, with a total of 16 teams participating in this year’s competition.

The competition was first played back in 1985, when Saudi Arabia edged past Qatar in the finals. 

Japan has been the most successful team in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup, having won the competition three times. Their most recent triumph came back in 2018.

Format

All the 16 nations participating in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023, have been drawn into four groups of four teams each. During the draw, the teams were seeded according to their performance in the 2018 AFC U-16 Championship final tournament and qualification.

Every team will play a game against each of their group opponents, in a round robin format. Once all the group games are over, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

The ranking in each group shall be determined on the basis of the number of points obtained in group matches. If two or more participating teams are equal on points, the following criteria are applied to determine the ranking.

i. Head-to-Head criteria 

• Higher number of points obtained in the group Matches between the Participating Teams in question;

• Superior goal difference from the group Matches between the Participating Teams in question;

• Higher number of goals scored in the group Matches between the Participating Teams in question;

ii. Tiebreaker

• If after having applied the Head -to -Head criteria, two or more participating teams still have an equal ranking, the Head-to-Head criteria shall be reapplied exclusively to the Matches between the Participating Teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, the Group Results criteria shall apply.

iii. Group Results criteria 

• Superior goal difference from all group Matches played

• Higher number of goals scored from all group Matches played 

• Kicks from the Penalty Mark only if two (2) Participating Teams still have an equal ranking and have played their last group Match against each other

• The lower score, calculated according to the number of yellow and red cards received in group Matches 

• The drawing of lots. 

Venue

The 2023 AFC U-17 Asain Cup will be played in four different stadiums - Rajamangala Stadium, Thammasat Stadium, Pathum Thani Stadium and Chonburi Stadium, across three cities in Thailand.

Telecast

India's games will be streamed on JioTV.

Player Eligibility

Players born between 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2008 are eligible to compete in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023. Each team should register a squad of minimum 18 players and maximum 23 players.
