Juventus reach an agreement 'not to participate' in UEFA Conference League due to financial issues

The Serie A giants will only play in domestic competition

Due to concerns over financial fair play, Juventus won't participate in European competition in the 2023–24 season, based on sources.

Juventus have agreed with UEFA to be sanctioned “only” for one season without European competitions. They will NOT play the 2023-24 Conference League.

The Italian powerhouses, who are accustomed to scandal off the pitch after a match-fixing controversy resulted in their relegation from Serie A in 2006, were docked ten points in May after a club trade inquiry revealed evidence of incorrect accountancy.

Along with losing points, five former Juve board members—including former president Andrea Agnelli—who resigned collectively in November as a result of a Turin public prosecutor probe into alleged dishonest bookkeeping were also barred from participating in football-related activities.

Juventus dropped out of the Champions League positions and into seventh place at the moment the penalty was passed down. At the time, they were second in the Italian top division.

But because of their final league standing, they were still eligible to play in the Europa Conference League this year.

However, a report from Corriere dello Sport claims that The Old Lady have come to a deal with UEFA that will see them leave the continent entirely this season in an effort to avoid additional penalties for breaking financial fair play rules and, in particular, to prevent any repercussions that might dash their hopes of competing in the Champions League in the 2024–25 season.

The purported arrangement agreed with European football's organisation is thought to be an affordable cost to be paid in terms of Juventus' new hierarchy as the team attempts to write a new chapter in its history.

Juventus' off-field problems were made worse by their performance last season, when they were eliminated from the Champions League group stage after five defeats in their last six games, including a demoralising 2-0 setback to Maccabi Haifa.

After being demoted to the Europa League, they performed marginally better, making it to the semifinals before being defeated 3-2 on aggregate over two legs by eventual champion Sevilla.
