Here are the best budget defenders to target

The FPL or Fantasy Premier League is is a fantasy sports game. It is the biggest fantasy football game in the world. Players have a set budget of £100 million and have to form a team of 15 players. This includes the starting XI and four more substitutes. No player can choose more than three players from the same team. Attackers who have performed for big teams consistently are usually very expensive.

Since players have to garner more points from goals scored by their attackers, not much money is left for defenders. However today we will take a look at the top five best £4.5 million defenders in the 2023-24 season.

5. Ezri Konsa

Aston Villa centre-back has stepped up his game over the past two years. The former Brentford player has cemented his name as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and in FPL. Ezri joined Aston Villa from Brentford back in 2019. The transition from the Championship to the Premier League was difficult for Ezri. Over the years Konsa became a much more calm and composed defender rather than jumping into tackles.

Ezri Konsa has also improved his attacking aspects. He proved this rightfully in pre-season after scoring a solo goal from his own half against Brentford.

4. Rico Henry

The 25-year-old has impressed with his consistent performances under Brentford manager Thomas Frank. Rico Henry has idolised Ashley Cole over the years and his recent performances are showing some similar traits.

Rico’s best trait is his ability to defend in one vs one situations. He is quite fast and makes it very difficult for his opponents in such situations. Moreover he has stepped up his attacking game as well. Rico Henry was the left back with most goals or crosses from open play in the 2022-23 season. This ensures that FPL players can possibly earn points from either a clean sheet , assist or both from Rico’s consistent performances.

3. Aaron Wan Bissaka

Manchester United have had many defensive woes over the past few seasons. Aaron Wan Bissaka was a regular starter in his first two seasons but lost his starting spot to Diogo Dalot. However he stepped up his defensive abilities and is arguably one of the best defenders to have in a one on one situation. His famous ” scoop” tackle has shown that even at the brink of getting dribbled past, Wan Bissaka regains possesion without any fouls.

However Wan Bissaka is not good when it comes to his attacking traits especially when it comes to comparing with the best right backs in the world. FPL players can definitely look forward to adding Wan Bissaka especially since he’s not hasty in defensive situations.

2. James Tarkowski

Everton have had big issues in the centre-back position since many years. They have employed over 15 players to fill that position till date. James Tarkowski, the former Burnley defender is faring off quite well at Everton.

Tarkowski is an experienced defender who has spent many years defending in the Premier League for Burnley. He’s quite tall and is very dominant in aerial abilities. Only Cuti Romero and Mohammed Salisu made more tackles as a centre-back in comparison to James Tarkowski.

1. Sven Botman

Newcastle United have definitely become a force to reckon with as they showed last season. The Magpies showed stellar performances throughout the season as they secured a UEFA Champions League spot.

Botman is quite tall, dominant in aerial duels just like any other centre-back. However, what seperates him from the rest is his ability to stay composed when he gets the ball. Sven does not resort to clearing the ball but rather loves to keep possesion and make decisive passes. Despite not having much prominent attacking traits, Botman had 5 goal contributions last season. Something which definitely interests the FPL users.
