Even after a decade-long absence, Blackburn Rovers keep a spot

In the world of Premier League football, where intensity and passion are cherished throughout the year, a certain aspect of the game also goes hand in hand. The notoriety of fouls, confrontations, and red cards that follow is a certain aspect. In the midst of the season, players often end up in heated situations with the opposition or even referees. The end result is a caution and even a send-off.

Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, clubs have accumulated quite a few accolades. And this time around, we will be exploring the dirty part of the game, the red cards. Football is a contact sport and thus is likely to have fouls and heated stuff here and there. So referees use red cards to keep track of who is in the wrong, which is usually followed by suspensions, fines, and bans.

Now we shall explore the top 10 clubs that have experienced their fair share of heated moments, resulting in a tally of red cards that adds a unique dimension to their stories:

Clubs with the most red cards in the Premier League

10. Aston Villa – 65 red cards

A few more red cards than Southampton, Liverpool, and Sunderland give Aston Villa the tenth spot in the list of total accumulated red cards in Premier League history. Although the Saints were themselves no saints with 64 and just a red card behind the Villains,

9. Manchester United – 71 red cards

A legendary club that has been in the Premier League since the inaugural season of 1992–93. Manchester United, after lifting the 1993 Premier League title, have now accumulated 12 more. The first time they lifted the Premier League trophy, they got 10 points clear of Aston Villa. And once again, in the matter of total red cards in PL history, they have managed to get the better of the Villans by adding six more reds to their collection.

8. Tottenham Hotspur – 73 red cards

Tottenham Hotspur, just like Manchester United, are another such club that has been around the first tier of English football since the Premier League was initiated in 1992. They have yet to be relegated from the Premier League. And have yet to lift the title even once since 1992. However, due to the notoriety of their players, Spurs have made it to the top 10 by defeating the Red Devils by a margin of two.

7. Manchester City – 75 red cards

Last season’s European treble winners are a story in themselves. From a time when they were hardly making noise in Manchester to becoming ‘the noisy neighbours’, the club has come very far. Manchester City, along with their progress, have gone on to accumulate a fiesta of 75 red cards.

6. Blackburn Rovers – 77 red cards

For a fact, Rovers have won two Premier League titles since their inception in 1992. Their hat trick, however, was halted by Blackburn Rovers. Rovers won the Premier League trophy in the 1994–95 season. They managed to clinch the title with a narrow lead of one over Manchester United. Even after a decade of relegation to the EFL Championship from the Premier League, they are yet to return to top-flight business. Still, the Riversiders stand firm at sixth with 77 red cards of their own.

5. West Ham United – 81 red cards

After a continental trophy drought lasting since the 1965 European Cup Winners Cup, the London club managed to get their hands on the UEFA Europa Conference League last season. But the three-time FA Cup winners also have a history with red cards. A total of 81 pitches put them in the fifth spot.

4. Chelsea – 85 red cards

A top 10 without Chelsea is hard to find. The club is in the post-Abramovich era under the ownership of Todd Boehly. Luck hasn’t been in their favour since then, even after very high investments in the squad. Even in undesirable accumulations of red cards, both luck and player behaviour haven’t done them justice either. We are talking about 85 red cards for the Blues.

3. Newcastle United – 92 red cards

Newcastle United are making their fair share of noise under Eddie Howe and after their 2021 takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The Magpies managed to climb the Premier League ladders to sit in fourth place in the final standings of last season. This deservingly gave them a route to the Champions League 2023–24 group stages. And as we are talking about the total red cards, They also made history by picking up 92 of their own, which gets them the third rank in this category.

2. Arsenal – 103 red cards

Last season, Arsenal thrilled the whole world with their pursuit of Premier League glory. However, the pursuit ended with a second-place finish after form dropped in the final months. Still, they have managed to make a name for themselves under Mikel Arteta. Anyway, coming back to talking about red cards, the Gunners find themselves second to Liverpool’s rivals. In just their last game against Crystal Palace, Arsenal managed to get one, which now totals 103 red card offences.

1. Everton – 106 red cards

The title for the club with the most red cards in Premier League history currently belongs to Everton. The club has had a fair share of players with the highest bookings for red card offences, such as Duncan Ferguson and several others. And by virtue of it, the Toffees have earned a whopping 106 red cards since the Premier League’s inception.
