Goalscoring records Erling Haaland can break in 2023-24 season
The Norwegian had the best first season a striker could ever dream with Man City
After leaving Borussia Dortmund to join Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team in Etihad, Erling Haaland hardly took any time to settle in. The Nike athlete started his goal-scoring momentum from the first Premier League game in the 2022-23 season for Cityzens. Even though nobody clearly knew what would happen going forwards.
Many players have had such debuts in the Premier League. Even Cristiano Ronaldo tucked in two goals on his second debut for Manchester United against Newcastle. But Haaland absolutely blew almost every defensive cover a team built to stop him for almost the full season. Fast forward to the 2022-23 season end, as many as 36 goals were scored in Premier League by the City number 9.
That wasn’t just it. Apart from the Premier League, the phenom took over the UEFA Champions League by storm too becoming the quickest player to score 35 goals in just 27 games. The treble-winning striker though can break many more this season:
Ten more to become Norway’s leading top scorer
The City number 9 currently has 24 goals for his country. A record that he shares with fellow countryman John Carew. Even though the number of games that both took varied massively. Carew took 91 games to achieve this feat while Haaland took a mere 25 outings with his national side.
However, the pinnacle spot is still occupied by Norway’s Jörgen Juve. Juve has hit a landmark 33 goals in 45 appearances to be the top scorer for Noway’s national football team. If Haaland scores 10 for his country this term. He can take over the reign as the top scorer for Norway of all time.

Absolutely can enter ‘all-time top 15 top scorers’ for Man City
Erling Haaland has 54 goals for the Man City team by now. And no, this mean feat wasn’t achieved in two seasons or more. A first season playing 53 games in all competitions is what the left-footed powerhouse needed to bring his tally from 0 goals for the Etihad club to 52. And another two were added in the opening Premier League fixture this season.
Haaland has already opened his account for the 2023-24 season scoring twice in an opening bout against newly promoted Burnley. And if he continues to hit the ground running like last season, the centre-forward could overtake Yaya Toure. City club legend Toure has notched up 82 goals during his time with City. This tally allows Toure to the hold the 15th place in the all-time scoring list for Man City.
Another 29 goals this season by Haaland will give him the top 15 scorers spot.
Some European records in the Champions League
Erling Haaland already boasts a tally of 35 goals in the UEFA Champions League competition. Last season alone he managed to net 12 in 11 games for Man City. The two-time Golden Boot winner is on the speed track of accumulating these stats.
Haaland’s 35 goals were scored in a total of a measly 27-game mark. And since last season’s treble-winning team, Man City will be looking to defend the title in 2023-24, we expect more of Haaland this season as well. The City number 9 already boasts all records of scoring 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 goals in the fewest games. And soon he could take over the 40. A bit more stretching, running and shot attempts might as well pull his luck to get to 50 as well.
Currently, Ruud van Nistelrooy holds the records for quickest to get 40 and 50. He took 45 and 62 games respectively to get to this feat. If City can hold their ground and reach the final once again, those 11 games should be enough for Haaland to grab the 40 feats as early as in the group stages. While to reach the 50 mark in lesser time than van Nistelrooy in just this season, Haaland will need to go as far as 15 goals within 11 games or less.
By the way, this will also give him a chance to wave a ‘hello’ to Mr Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo who holds the highest-ever tally of 17 goals in a season. Ronaldo holds it from the season of 2013-14 where he played all the 11 games possible.
Haaland can get the better of Dixie Dean’s English top-flight record
Haaland’s astonishing goal-scoring prowess may rival many records, but one milestone might elude him. In 1927-28, Dixie Dean struck an unparalleled 63 top-flight goals for Everton in all competition, a feat Haaland fell 11 goals short of last season. Yet, Haaland could potentially surpass Dean’s 63 all-competition goals, a record for an English top-tier player. Although he scored 52 times in his debut City season, second only to Dean, a late-season dip thwarted his chase. Haaland’s next attempt holds promise. However, catching Lionel Messi‘s 73 goals in 2011-12 would demand a remarkable surge.
