The Argentine has broken another record following his move to the MLS

Inter Miami were nowhere on the landscape of the MLS, they boasted a sorry win record of 41%, and before their last 3 games, the franchise founded in 2018 had a winless streak of 11 games. Inter Miami had not garnered a solid fan following in their five years of existence. Their top scorer of all time record is held by Gonzalo Higuain with 29 goals in the 67 league appearances he made for them. Inter Miami were a team never taken seriously when the business end of the MLS came around.

All of that changed when it was announced that Lionel Messi was to join Inter Miami. Messi, who had achieved everything in Europe and on the world stage, sent the world into shockwaves when it was announced that he would be joining what was till then a below average MLS side.

The whole football world looked curiously as to how one of the game’s greatest would deal with a below par team in a league which could be described as mildly popular at best.

As Messi does with most things, he has set the MLS on fire. Till now he has made three appearances in pink in which he has scored five goal which includes two braces.

Not only Inter Miami, Messi’s arrival has revamped the perception of the whole sport in the USA. In just a week, he has brought a number of eyeballs unseen before by the MLS. So much so, that everyone in the USA wants to join the party by buying a Messi t-shirt.

In terms of domestic sales, Messi has overtaken NFL legend Tom Brady in terms of jerseys sold while changing a sports team, Tom Brady held the record when he transferred to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from New England Patriots in 2020. Before that, the record was held NBA icon Lebron James when he joined the LA Lakers in 2018. Surpassing two of America’s most popular sports and its two most popular players is no joke, until Messi arrives in the arena.

On the international level, he surpassed his long-time rival and fellow soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese set the record when he joined Manchester United in 2021.

Messi Inter Miami shirts are sold out all across the country, kit manufacturer Adidas has mentioned on their site that Messi’s shirts might not be available till October. Such kind of popularity is unheard of for an MLS team.
