It is being reported that Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami have been invited to partake in the upcoming 2024 edition of the Copa Libertadores. The invitation was formally made by the president of the Argentina Football Association (AFA) Claudio Tapia oh the behest of CONMEBOL chief Alejandro Dominguez.

The Copa Libertadores is the most prestigious club football title in South America, and is equivalent to the UEFA Champions League played in Europe.

Only South American nations who are members of CONMEBOL are eligible to participate in the Copa Libertadores. However, CONMEBOL have been keen on expanding the reach of the tournament. Inter Miami aren’t the only side CONMEBOL are interested in, they are also keen on bring more teams from CONCACAF into the Copa Libertadores fold. Most of these teams are expected to be from either USA or Mexico.

The Copa Libertadores was established in 1960 and since has become the most prestigious club tournament in South America. Thirty-two teams take part in the competition. The Current defending Champions are Brazilian Club Flamengo, who won the 2022 edition. The 2023 edition is currently ongoing with the final scheduled to be played on 4th November.

If Inter Miami do end up participating in the competition, they will be serious contenders for the title as the arrival of Lionel Messi has completely changed the Florida based team’s fortune. They were on an 11-game winless streak before the Argentine Talisman arrived. However, since his arrival, they are yet to lose or even draw a game. Messi has taken Inter Miami to the finals of the Leagues Cup 2023, where they are to face Nashville on 20th August. This will be Inter Miami’s first final in history.
