Newcastle United predicted lineup for 2023-24 season
A look at Magpies’ squad for the upcoming season
Newcastle United seems to have transformed positively in the right direction. Since the change of ownership, with the new Saudi owners bringing huge wealth the development of the Black and Whites does not seem too overwhelming. It is already visible as they saw an early Champions League qualification in the last season. This time around they will be looking to strengthen all the departments to make it even more worthwhile.
Under Eddie Howe’s leadership, notable progress has been achieved, in maximizing player potential. To maintain growth, astute recruitment in the summer transfer window is crucial. With the new Premier League season set to begin on Saturday let’s explore how Newcastle could shape up for the upcoming season.
Nick Pope- Goalkeeper
Nick Pope had to skip playing for his country because he needed surgery for his ongoing hand problem. But the Magpies need not worry as he’s going to be back in action for the first game of the new season against Aston Villa. He had an amazing year as the goalkeeper for the Geordies. Consequently gaining a strong reputation and following in the parts of Newcastle. Meaning he will most likely continue to be the main goalkeeper choice for Eddie Howe.
Kieran Trippier- Right Back
Newcastle fans voted their captain, Kieran Trippier, as the best player of the last season. Unsurprisingly so, as he featured in every single game for the club in the 2022-23 season. Playing a total of 3,894 minutes in all the competitions last season. Trippier is a very experienced and respected leader in the team, and he managed to carry his previous clubs’ reputation here in Upon the Tyne is a feat to be appreciated.
Fabian Schar- Centre Back
Fabian Schar, 31, is as experienced and skilled a defender in the modern game as they come. Known for his great passing and distribution from defense to attack. In the 2022-23 season, he made an impressive comeback to his peak from the blemishes of the past seasons. Especially while playing alongside Botman. Earlier, under Steve Bruce, he didn’t even get a chance to play and almost left the club. But things changed when Eddie Howe became the manager, and Schar begin to write his own story from thereon in.

Sven Botman- Centre Back
The Magpies’ defense stood out in Europe, in the 2022-23 season, thanks to the strong partnership of Sven Botman with Fabian Schar. It was just a perfect mix as Schar brought his experience and maturity to the fore. While Botman, a young and skilled defender, would just be fearless at winning aerial duels and predicting the game’s flow. Consequently, they led Newcastle’s defense to hold one of the best defensive records in the Premier League last season, allowing only 33 goals past them. Considering this, it will be hard for Howe to look beyond the Botman-Schar partnership until it completely goes haywire.
Tino Livramento- Left Back
By joining Newcastle, Tino Livramento is expected to bring more action to the left side of the field, which was lacking for the team in the previous season. Although his performance by numbers is slightly below the league’s average in some areas, he stands out for his dribbling skills. For Southampton, in the 2021-22 season, the then-teenager covered an impressive distance of 6.7 meters while carrying the ball. At the time it was the most among Premier League full-backs. One key aspect that everyone will be eyeing is Livramento’s chemistry with Isak down the left side. So far it is looking lethal, at least on paper that is!

Bruno Guimaraes- Defensive Midfielder
With a series of consistent performances, last season, Bruno Guimaraes earned a spot in Brazil’s national team this summer. A versatile midfielder, excelling in both offense and defense, he offered a lot of depth to the team. His influence was reflected in the team’s style of play. As his absence in six games led to Newcastle losing all of them. What is more exciting is that at 25, Bruno, a favorite of Newcastle fans, is just entering his prime. And the goal will now be to position him higher and enhance his leadership qualities.
Sandro Tonali- Central Midfielder
Howe reinforced Newcastle’s midfield with AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali, known for his consistent performance. Tonali’s addition could alter the 4-3-3 system, placing him as the central player between Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. His durability, showcased during his time at Milan, is his standout trait. That midfield trio with the addition of the Italian youngster is looking beastly. The strength, aggression, pace, and a mix of experience and young flair will be in full showing for the Geordies in the upcoming season.

Joelinton- Central Midfielder
Joelinton’s evolution into becoming one of the league’s most skilled midfielders is no short of a fairytale. Shifting from a £40 million striker who struggled to find the target to one of the most feared midfielders in the league to play against. With an unyielding work ethic and a relentless fighting spirit, the Brazilian player has not only revitalized his performance but has also left a significant mark on the team. It is all down to Howe’s influence, who showed his faith in players’ abilities. And without any doubt, Joelinton will retain his position as a regular starter in the side in the new season.
Miguel Almiron- Right Winger
Eddie Howe is emphasizing how crucial Miguel Almiron is for the upcoming season. Last season, Almiron performed exceptionally well, scoring many goals and winning individual awards for the team. Speaking to the media in Philadelphia, Howe highlighted Almiron’s significance, praising his goal-scoring and ball-pressing abilities from the previous year. In the new season, Almiron will be competing with Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes, and Anthony Gordon for a spot in the front three of Howe’s lineup.
Callum Wilson- Striker
At 31, when most strikers start to hit a curb in their career, Callum Wilson has looked evermore reliant. The former Bournemouth striker was key for the Magpies. Well, at least, to ensure that the goals don’t dry up. He scored 18 goals last season and could have added more if there was stability upfront from the start. It was still the most goals scored by a Newcastle player since 2003-04 when Alan Shearer hit 22. Henceforth, it will be surprising if Howe doesn’t choose him as the main striker.
Alexander Isak- Left Winger
Alexander Isak was quick to hit the ground running at Newcastle, last season. Although the Swede was sidelined due to a thigh injury at the beginning of the 2022-23 season. It wasn’t until after the World Cup that Newcastle fans got to see his repertoire of skills. Upon his return from the injury, Isak was exceptional beyond belief. Scoring eight goals in the last 19 games and assisting twice. His dribbles on the left flank even drew comparisons to Ronaldo. And surely, his flair will be entertaining to watch for the fans to watch him play from day one of the new season.
