Alessandro Florenzi becomes latest Italian player under betting investigation

Sandro Tonali has already been handed a long-term ban after breaching betting rules

According to Italian media sources on Wednesday, Turin authorities are investigating players who use illegal services to wager on games, and AC Milan fullback Alessandro Florenzi is the latest Italian footballer to be brought under investigation.

Sandro Tonali of Newcastle and Nicolò Fagioli of Juventus, who inked a contract renewal with the Turin team on Tuesday, had already received 10- and seven-month bans from the Italian soccer association in connection with the growing case.

Although Nicolò Zaniolo of Aston Villa has stated he did not wager on games, he is still under investigation.

Zaniolo’s teammate Florenzi did not immediately respond to a message. Prosecutors may ask him questions in the upcoming days, according to the LaPresse news agency. The football federation may potentially launch an investigation.

Florenzi, 32, signed a deal with Milan last year that runs through 2024–25. He was a member of the Italian squad that took home the 2021 European Championship. A request for comment was not responded to right away by the club.

It has been stated that Florenzi will discuss the case with the Italian attorney in the upcoming days. He has appeared in five Serie A games this campaign and has come off the bench five more times, but he is still a valuable element of Milan’s team.

With 49 caps under his belt, the 32-year-old is an experienced Italy international who is under agreement with Milan until 2025. Since signing with the San Siro club in 2022, he has made 49 appearances.

He will have to wait anxiously to find out how the inquiry turns out. Following the international break, Milan plays Fiorentina on November 25.
