ISL 2023-24: Gameweek 10 Team of the Week
This gameweek saw the midfielders delivering fabulous performances.
Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 campaign is shaping up to be exciting, entertaining and unpredictable. The highly competitive nature of the league ensures that any team can swing a fixture in their favour thanks to individual players making the difference. In the past round of matches, the league fixtures saw a similar trend where individual brilliance had a huge say on the result.
Gameweek 10 was full of high-octane action. Odisha FC carried their AFC Cup form into the ISL and beat Hyderabad FC comfortably. Mumbai City FC’s life after Des Buckingham is struggling to hit second gear as they drew both of their games in the past week without scoring a goal. There were plenty of other notable matches involving impressive performances by both foreign and domestic players.
On that note, here is a look at Khel Now’s Team of the Week for GW 10 of the 2023-24 Indian Super League:
Formation: 4-3-2-1
GK – Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (Bengaluru FC)
Bengaluru FC played two matches in the past game week and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu performed well in both of them. While he could not prevent Chennaiyin FC from scoring two goals from the penalty spot, he kept a clean sheet against Jamshedpur FC in a 1-0 win for the Blues. He made seven saves across the two fixtures.
RB – Nishu Kumar (East Bengal FC)
East Bengal FC was resilient and Nishu Kumar was one of their best performers in defence that held Mumbai City FC to a goalless draw in their backyard. He made five clearances during the game and kept a close watch on attackers on the right flank without leaving his position unchecked.
CB – Subhasish Bose (Mohun Bagan Super Giant)
Subhasish Bose has been one of the consistent performers in the Mohun Bagan lineup this term. The defender was once again sensational in the 3-1 win over NorthEast United. He did his defensive duties well but more importantly, scored a scrumptious goal to put the result beyond doubt.
CB – Mourtada Fall (Odisha FC)
Mourtada Fall scored his third Indian Super League goal of the season for Odisha FC in the 3-0 win over Hyderabad FC. The centre-back was also solid in his reading of the game and duels. Thanks to his resolute performance, Odisha FC kept a clean sheet despite Hyderabad FC’s best efforts to score.
LB – Naocha Huidrom Singh (Kerala Blasters FC)
Kerala Blasters FC kept a clean sheet away from home against Punjab FC at the JLN Stadium and a huge credit for this feat goes to Naocha Huidrom Singh. He had a whopping 108 touches of the ball and was a busy figure on the night, winning 10 ground and two aerial duels.
CM – Ahmed Jahouh (Odisha FC)
Ahmed Jahouh was once again a dominant force in the midfield for Odisha FC in their win over Hyderabad FC. The midfielder had 107 touches of the ball and completed a whopping 15 long balls during the game. His influence and creativity were crucial for the Kalinga Warriors yet again.
CM – Mohammed Azhar (Kerala Blasters FC)
Kerala Blasters FC’s midfield was superb against Punjab FC as it had the perfect balance because of figures like Mohammed Azhar. He covered every inch of the field to win the ball back and provide cover to the backline. The midfielder finished the game with a 91% pass success rate too.
CM – Suresh Singh Wangjam (Bengaluru FC)
Suresh Singh Wangjam showed incredible tenacity in the midfield for Bengaluru FC. While some may deem it to be an unpopular pick in the Team of the Week, the midfielder was one of the few players who gave their all on the pitch in the 2-0 defeat to Chennaiyin FC. Later on, he was immense for the Blues in their 1-0 win over Jamshedpur FC where he made three interceptions, won three ground duels and took four shots on goal.
CAM – Phalguni Singh (NorthEast United)
Phalguni Singh took a leaf from Parthib Gogoi’s book and scored a mind-blowing goal from long-range that took Mohun Bagan by shock. While the Highlanders could not win the game, Singh’s bravery and ambition deserve a mention after having scored possibly the best goal of the week.
CAM – Rafael Crivellaro (Chennaiyin FC)
Rafael Crivellaro is an indispensable figure in the Chennaiyin FC squad and he proved it once again in the past week. The Brazilian scored from the spot and won another penalty in the 2-0 win against Bengaluru FC. He now has three goals and five assists in 10 appearances.
ST – Roy Krishna (Odisha FC)
Roy Krishna scored a sensational brace for Odisha FC, helping them secure a comfortable 3-0 win over Hyderabad FC. The striker has accumulated four goals this season, only two behind the leader in the race for the Golden Boot.
