Bayern are the most successful club in German football history, having won a record 33 national titles, including 11 consecutively since 2013, 20 national cups, and numerous European honours.
FC Bayern Munich, a dominant force in the Bundesliga, have the record for being ever-present in the top divisions since 1965. But besides such an outstanding history and the number of trophies won, this club has had some bad moments and matches.
Here we look at some of the heaviest defeats of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga since 2000:
5-1 vs. Schalke (2002)
FC Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga title hopes suffered when they were beaten 5-1 by FC Schalke. FC Bayern Munich’s hopes of defending their Bundesliga title were dealt a major blow when they were thrashed 5-1 by FC Schalke. Belgian international striker Emile Mpenza scored Schalke’s first goal in the 34th minute and set up team-mate Ebbe Sand a minute later to give the hosts a 2-0 half-time lead.
Bayern’s Michael Tarnat was sent off in the 41st minute. Mehmet Scholl scored for Bayern in the 49th minute to make it 2-1, but goals from Jörg Böhme, Nico van Hoogdalem and Niels Oude-Kamphuis sealed a great win for Schalke.

5-1 vs. Wolfsburg (2009)
On April 4, 2009, Wolfsburg thrashed Die Roten 5-1, with Grafite and Dzeko scoring a brace apiece. It was the pivotal game in the title race and it was Grafite who inflicted the bitter blow of humiliation upon Germany’s most successful club. In the space of 14 second-half minutes from the 63rd to 77the Wolfsburg raced away with it. Dzeko and Grafite both scored twice.
5-1 vs. Eintracht Frankfurt (2019)
Bayern Munich suffered a crushing defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt after the German champions had Jerome Boateng sent off after nine minutes. Filip Kostic and Djibril Sow put the hosts 2-0 ahead, but Robert Lewandowski responded for Niko Kovac’s side with his 14th league goal of the campaign. David Abraham made it 3-1 shortly after half-time before Martin Hinteregger and Goncalo Paciencia added their goals.
5-1 vs. Eintracht Frankfurt (2023)
Eintracht Frankfurt humiliated Bayern Munich 5-1 with a three-goal first-half performance on 9 December 2023 to snap the champions’ unbeaten run in the Bundesliga season. In an explosive first half, Eintracht overran Bayern and exposed their error-prone backline, scoring three times in 36 minutes. Kimmich made amends just before the break with a powerful shot from 20 metres out to cut the deficit but it did not stop the home side. Dina and Ansgar scored two goals in the second half to finally finish this Bavarian humiliation.
