David de Gea in contention to replace injured Nick Pope at Newcastle
David de Gea is currently without a club since leaving Manchester United
Newcastle are waiting on the results of scans on Nick Pope’s shoulder injury before evaluating their alternatives, which could include an offer for free agent David de Gea.
Pope is projected to miss four months of play after being forced off late in Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United due to a recurrence of the dislocated shoulder injury he sustained while playing for Burnley. A surgical procedure is currently thought to be the most probable course of doing something.
The last time it happened, custodian Pope missed just over five months of action, from July 2018 to January 2019.
Newcastle hopes that this time around, his absence won’t be as long and that he returns when the regular season ends. Over the following 48 hours, the team will consult with specialists to determine the extent of his injury and how long he is expected to be out of the game.
Nevertheless, Pope’s injury will be a huge setback for Eddie Howe and Newcastle, as he has been a vital component of their meteoric rise since joining them for £10 million from Burnley in June 2022.
Pope’s chances of rejoining the England team before the Euros may be impacted, and Newcastle may be forced to make a deal to bolster their goalkeeping staff.

De Gea is one possible choice Newcastle has considered. After 12 years at Old Trafford, he left Manchester United in the summer, but he hasn’t signed with a new team yet.
Given his background, his instant availability, plus the fact he wouldn’t require a transfer fee, he would be highly appealing.
Even yet, if Newcastle made a serious approach for him, he might have agreed to a lower salary to align with their pay scale, as he was paid £375,000 per week during his last deal at Manchester United.
Martin Dubravka, a former number-one for Newcastle, replaced Pope against Manchester United, where he spent a brief loan period the previous season.
