Egypt announce 27-man squad for AFCON 2023; Mohamed Salah to lead charge
Egypt have won the most number of AFCON titles
The African Cup of Nations’ most successful team, Egypt, have announced their final squad for the upcoming tournament in Ivory Coast.
Vitoria had announced a 55-man preliminary squad earlier this month, and while the final squad includes a lot of familiar faces, it also saw the exclusions of many players such as Al Ahly duo Yasser Ibrahim and Hussein El-Shahat, while Pyramids trio Osama Galal, Ali Gabr, and Ahmed Samy cut Egypt’s quest for an 8th continental crown.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah will be the leader of the pack. The Egyptian King has played in three AFCONs for his nation and the team has finished as the runners-up twice. Liverpool confirmed in a club statement on Friday that Salah will not be involved in the FA Cup third-round game at Arsenal on January 7.
The list included seven Al Ahly players, three Zamalek players, six players from Pyramids and eight foreign-based players.

Egypt plays in group B alongside Ghana, Cape Verde and Mozambique. The Pharaohs will open their participation in the competition on 14 January against Mozambique.
The Egyptians lost to Senegal in the 2021 finals. They will rely on their senior players and hope that the record of seven titles is extended to eight.
