Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Real Betis

Many were taken aback by Carlo Ancelotti’s choice of goalkeeper in their 1-1 draw with Real Betis. Although Kepa Arrizabalaga had earlier stated that he would start again following an injury, the Italian chose to stick with Andriy Lunin at the Benito Villamarin, and it proved to be a wise choice.

Lunin, who has been outstanding for Real Madrid lately, put on yet another impressive display as Los Blancos left Seville with a point after making five stops. Perhaps this indicates that he will hold the top place going forward.

Lunin will not, however, start Real Madrid’s upcoming Champions League match on Tuesday against Union Berlin. According to Cope, Ancelotti will give Kepa the go-ahead, thus he will play for the first time since the goalless draw against Rayo Vallecano at the beginning of November.

This could indicate that Ancelotti is allowing Kepa to prove he deserves to be first, or it could signal that Lunin is just taking a break before making a comeback to the starting lineup the following weekend. In any case, during the next several weeks, it will be interesting to see Real Madrid’s goalkeeping dynamic.

Real Madrid’s attempt to win three points against Real Betis on Saturday was thwarted as they gave up an equaliser in the second half, resulting in a 1-1 draw at the Benito Villamarin. They now sit one point ahead of Girona in the La Liga standings as a result of the outcome, although the Catalans can take the top spot if they beat Barcelona on Sunday.

Both teams will think they could have, and maybe ought to have won after such an exciting match in Seville. During his post-match press briefing, Carlo Ancelotti told the media (via Diario AS) that he believed the outcome was a fair evaluation of the full 90 minutes.

Tuesday is Real Madrid’s last Champions League group stage encounter against Union Berlin; it ought to be intriguing to watch who Ancelotti chooses. Kepa hasn’t played for Los Blancos in more than a month, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see him, and it would be an excellent game to get him back into the game.
