Football, also known as soccer, teams dominate the top five ranks.

The year 2023 was huge for football due to several iconic events. It was an eventful year for soccer, as it is popularly known in the United States of America, due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia, Lionel Messi’s move to the Major League Soccer, Manchester City winning the treble and more.

Interestingly, football teams were googled heavily across the calendar year. There are plenty of reasons why football garners huge popularity; one of them is that it enjoys massive global fame. People across the globe search for football teams to keep track of their results and the high-profile transfers in the football world.

Usually, American teams in sports such as basketball and soccer dominate Google searches and such was the case in 2023 as well. As the year reaches its conclusion, here is a look at the top five most searched sports teams on Google in 2023:

5. Miami Heat

Miami Heat is one of the most popular basketball franchises in the world. It boasts of famous basketball players such as Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry and more. They reached the NBA Finals in 2023 but lost the title to the Denver Nuggets after a valiant effort. Around 13.08 million viewers tuned in to watch Game 5 of the NBA Finals which saw the Nuggets win and secure the championship.

Manchester City generated a lot of interest globally in 2023. The Premier League outfit won the elusive treble which comprises winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in the same season. They also won the league for the third time in a row. The club was also in the news because of the reports which suggested Man City broke more than 115 financial fair play rules and refused to cooperate with the investigation into their FFP breaches.

Thanks to Ronaldo’s arrival in the Saudi Pro League, several high-profile players followed suit across the league. In Al Nassr alone, players like Aymeric Laporte, Alex Telles, Marcelo Brozovic and more joined after Ronaldo which increased people’s interest towards the club further.

2. LA Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers, popularly known as LA Lakers, is an extremely popular franchise in the NBA. It currently has players like Lebron James, Anthony Davis, Taurean Prince and more who boast global fame like no other. The outfit reached the Conference semi-finals but lost to eventual NBA championship winners Denver Nuggets by 4-0 in the series. Despite their failure to win the NBA Playoffs, the LA Lakers generated huge interest and became the second most-searched sports team on Google in the year 2023.

Inter Miami of the Major League Soccer was the most searched sports team on Google in 2023. The football team saw an instant rise in interest after it was revealed that Argentina’s legendary footballer Lionel Messi was set to sign for them. A player of his calibre, who enjoys support from every corner of the world, brought a lot of viewership for Inter Miami and the MLS as a whole.

For instance, Inter Miami had around 1m followers on Instagram due to David Beckham’s ownership of the club who is himself a hugely popular figure. However, post-Messi’s arrival, Inter Miami’s follower count has reached 15 million on the social media site/app.
