Ibson Melo scored only one goal for NorthEast United in ISL 2023-24.

Indian Super League (ISL) side NorthEast United FC have parted ways with Brazilian forward Ibson Melo with a mutual agreement, Khel Now can confirm. “Ibson (Melo) has left the team. The club has mutually parted ways with the player,” a source informed Khel Now.

The highlanders have let go off their only proper foreign striker and now only have domestic options to choose from. They will play their first Kalinga Super Cup fixture against Jamshedpur FC on Wednesday evening and will miss Ibson’s services.

Ibson Melo’s contributions for NorthEast United FC

The Brazilian did not have a bright time with the Guwahati-based club as he failed to live up to everyone’s expectations. Melo was not one of the first names in the starting XI and had mostly operated from the bench.

He played nine matches in the ISL for the Highlanders and featured for just 292 minutes. His best and only goal contribution for his side came in with a match-winning last-minute penalty against Jamshedpur FC in October.

Other than that, Ibson scored a crucial goal in the 2023 Durand Cup for NorthEast United against Downtown Heroes.

Ibson’s comments

The player also took to his social media and announced his departure from the club and thanked the fans for their support. He also wished NorthEast United the very best for the remainder of the season.

“Today my relationship with NorthEast United FC ends, and I want to thank everyone for the opportunity, especially the Technical Committee, the president, the entire fans for their support and the players. I wish them a good season, I will always be there for them,” posted Ibson.

NorthEast United FC’s season so far

The Highlanders have had a much better season in comparison to the last couple of campaigns in the Indian top flight. They currently find themselves inside the top six with twelve points to their name in as many games.
