The Toffees welcome opposition that won their first-ever Premier League game against them

Everton had to play 180 minutes of football to reach the FA Cup 4th Round. Initially, a normal 3rd-round fixture was scheduled against Premier League rivals Crystal Palace. As the game ended 0-0 in normal time, a replay was bound to happen. In the replay which was held at Goodison Park, the Toffees triumphed finally by a 1-0 scoreline.

Luton Town on the other hand were also in a similar situation. A 0-0 result at Kenilworth Road against Football League One side Bolton Wanderers meant a replay. At the Toughsheet Community Stadium, Bolton hosted the Hatters for the 3rd Round replay. After going 1-0 down, the visitors came from behind to win 2-1.

Kick-Off:

Saturday, 27 January 2024 at 3:00 PM UK (8:30 PM IST)

Location: Goodison Park

Form

Everton (in all competitions): W-D-D-L-L

Luton Town (in all competitions): W-D-D-L-W

Players to Watch

Vitaliy Mykolenko (Everton)

In football, defenders rarely get the limelight. Vitaliy Mykolenko is one such case. The left-back performed with composure against the Eagles in the 3rd Round replay. The Ukrainian defender made plenty of good passes and a few tackles as well.

Chiedozie Ogbene (Luton Town)

The Hatters progressed from 3rd Round all thanks to Chiedozie Ogbene. After Bolton and Luton were stuck at 1-1 from the early 15 minutes, the game seemed to enter a deadlock. Ogbene popped up in the 57 minute to give his side the lead which his team held brilliantly until the final whistle.

Match Facts

  • Luton have never progressed against Everton in the FA Cup
  • The Hatters have a good memory of Goodison Park’s visit from last time. Here they won 2-1 to record their first-ever PL victory
  • The hosts have failed to progress only once in their last eight FA Cup 4th Round ties

Injury & Team News

Sean Dyche has a few players on the sideline. Dele Alli is yet to feature this season. Idrissa Gueye is on the Africa Cup of Nations duty for his national side Senegal. Ashley Young should be close to making a return from a hamstring injury. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Séamus Coleman are dealing with hamstring issues.

The visitors squad will be lacking the strengths of Marvelous Nakamba, Mads Anderson, Tom Lockyer and Issa Kabore. Captain Lockyer had suffered cardiac arrest in December 2023, so is in recovery mode. Kabore is on AFCON duties with Burkina Faso.

Match Prediction for Everton vs Luton Town

Goodison Park doesn’t have a happy memory from the last time when Luton visited them. The visitors had won 2-1 that time in a game for the Premier League. Now this 4th Round FA Cup tie presents an opportunity for Dyche and Co. to get even. Expecting the Toffees to move deeper into the competition from here on.
