Girona's Michel Sanchez among potential replacements for Eddie Howe at Newcastle United
Michel’s Girona are top of LaLiga this season
According to rumours in Spain, Girona coach Michel Sanchez has surfaced as Eddie Howe’s possible successor. In his first season in command, the 48-year-old guided Girona to promotion to La Liga. The previous season, he guided the Catalans to 10th place.
Girona, who are owned by the same holding firm as Manchester City, have surprised everyone this season by drawing even with Real Madrid at the very top of the Spanish league.
A number of the top teams in Europe have taken notice of Michel as a result of Girona’s achievements. Girona’s connections to City may make Michel a suitable candidate for Pep Guardiola, and Barcelona are eyeing the former Rayo Vallecano manager as a replacement for Xavi.
As per Marca, the owners of Newcastle are ‘looking very seriously’ at giving Michel full control. The Spaniard is regarded as a formidable contender to succeed Howe if the former manager of Bournemouth is relieved of his responsibilities.

Howe led Newcastle to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup final last season when the Magpies qualified for the Champions League for the first time in twenty years.
However, their trip into the top tournament in European football was fleeting as they were eliminated by Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals last month after finishing last in their group’s competition.
Newcastle is fatigued and on a streak of seven losses in eight games across all competitions going into the start of the year due to an injury situation that has steadily gotten worse over the last two months.
The Magpies are currently ninth in the Premier League, 11 points behind fourth-place Arsenal, and are out of the European spots for the first time since August after suffering four losses in their previous five games.
With crucial FA Cup third-round matches against Sunderland and Premier League matches against Manchester City and Aston Villa left until the final day of the month, there’s a chance their luck could run out before it does.
Howe has declined to use injury as an excuse for his decline in form and is certain that finishing in the top four is still possible.
