The EFL Cup is popularly known as the Carabao Cup

The League Cup (EFL Cup/Carabao Cup) first started in 1961 is one of England’s top-tier domestic competitions. The tournament is held throughout seven rounds and the finals are played at the iconic Wembley Stadium. The defending champions are Manchester United since they beat Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final in 2023.

Many big clubs have made it to the finals of the Carabao Cup consistently over the years. Manchester City are honourable mentions in the history of the EFL Cup. The Cityzens have won the Carabao Cup 8 times and are second-best to Liverpool in terms of most EFL Cups. They are also the only team alongside Liverpool to win four consecutive Carabao Cup titles.

Let’s take a look at the top five clubs with the most EFL Cup finals:

5. Arsenal – 8

The Gunners are a legendary club ranked as one of the best teams in the Premier League. Despite playing in eight finals, Arsenal have only won the Carabao Cup twice in their history. They last won it in 1993 and have failed to win it after that.

Arsenal’s most recent Carabao Cup final was back in 2018 when they faced Manchester City. Unfortunately for them the contest ended in a one-sided 3-0 win to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

4. Tottenham Hotspurs – 9

Contrary to popular belief, Tottenham Hotspurs has a lot of history especially when it comes to the EFL Cup. Having reached the finals nine times, The Lilywhites have won the Carabao Cup four times in their history. Tottenham Hotspurs are the only team alongside Manchester United to win a major trophy from the 1950s to 2000s.

Tottenham Hotspurs won their first Carabao Cup in 1971 and then won their second one just two years later in 1973. Tottenham Hotspurs last reached the EFL Cup final in 2021 but eventually lost it 1-0 against Manchester City.

3. Chelsea – 10

Another giant in the Premier League has made it’s way to this list. Chelsea has made it to 10 Carabo Cup finals winning 5 of them. The first time they won it was back in the 1964-65 season.

Chelsea last won the Carabao Cup back in 2015 when they beat Tottenham Hotspurs 2-0 in the finals. Both John Terry and Diego Costa scored goals in the first half to ensure Chelsea their 5th EFL title. Chelsea were in last year’s final as well in 2022 losing it against Liverpool on penalties. Now once again Chelsea have made it to the 2023-24 finals against Liverpool.

2. Manchester United – 10

The mighty Red Devils have won the Carabao Cup six times in their history. Manchester United have made it to 10 EFL Cup finals which includes last season’s (2022-23) final as well. After Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, Manchester United failed on many occasions to win the EFL. They finally won it in the 2016-17 and in the 2022-23 season.

Manchester United are the previous winners beating Newcastle United 2-0 in the final at Wembley.

1. Liverpool – 14

The Scousers have won the Carabao Cup nine times and have reached the finals for an astounding fourteen times. Liverpool has dominated majority of this competition. They are the first team to garner four consecutive Carabao Cup titles from 1981 to 1984. Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have reached two finals and won only one EFL Cup.

Chelsea and Liverpool have faced each other twice in the EFL Cup finals. In the 2017-18 final, Liverpool lost 2-1 to Chelsea. Liverpool’s next and recent final was back in the 2021-22 season when they faced Chelsea again. The Scousers won their ninth title in the 2021-22 final beating Chelsea on penalties.
