CHICAGO— Major League Soccer sources verified to The Enquirer on Sunday that FC Cincinnati are nearing completion of a transfer involving Inter Miami CF and U.S. men’s national team defender DeAndre Yedlin.

The trade’s details are still unknown, but the league’s sources verified that Yedlin will be joining FC Cincinnati. Miami would receive $172,000 in General Allocation Money, or “GAM” as it is more often known. GAM is the currency of choice for MLS personnel and roster trades, according to Tom Bogert of The Athletic. As part of the agreement, no FC Cincinnati player will relocate to Miami.

FC Cincinnati are able to fill a need at right-back thanks to the move. The action is purportedly seen internally as consistent with the FCC’s “win now” philosophy. The team, who recently won the Members’ Shield in 2023, is still a strong contender for titles and cups in 2024.

After Santiago Arias left FC Cincinnati in the offseason, FCC found itself shorthanded at right back, where they usually use a right wing-back. Cincinnati has employed Yuya Kubo as a stopgap at right-back so far in 2024.

In place of Luca Orellano, whose father died away, Kubo shifted to the left on Saturday against the Chicago Fire, with Alvas Powell playing on the right side.

Yedlin’s arrival would provide FC Cincinnati with a skilled and seasoned boost at the position, negating the need for stopgap measures.

Yedlin, 30, is a native of Seattle and has played for Newcastle United FC in England over 100 times in addition to making 81 appearances for the USMNT. Yedlin also played for Sunderland (England), Tottenham Hotspur FC (English Premier League), and Galatasaray (Turkey), a Turkish team with a passionate fan base that is regarded as a significant player in the European game.Yedlin was added to the USMNT rosters for the World Cups in 2014 and 2022.
