A new record-breaking player became the most-captained for a single game week this season

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is one of the most popular games out there in this particular category. Millions of users around the world participate in the game. They select the best team from the allotted budget and hope that they bring in a lot of points through real-life performances. There is also a captain of the team whose points total double for that game week. 

It is absolutely vital to select an ideal player as captain as double points tally can make all the difference. More often than not, a player who is having a sensational season becomes the popular choice as captain amongst the user base. In the last few years, Mohamed Salah has been a popular choice due to his goalscoring prowess while playing for Liverpool.

However, there is a new record holder in terms of becoming the most captained player in a single FPL game week. On that note, here is a look at the five instances of the most captained player in a single FPL game week. 

5. Mohamed Salah - 4,738,421 (GW18, 2021-22)

Mohamed Salah eventually became the league’s top goalscorer, sharing the golden boot with Son Heung-Min last season. The Egyptian managed to score 23 goals and provide 14 assists in 35 appearances. 

He was a popular choice across the season for FPL captaincy. During the GW18 of the 2021-22 season, a total of 4,738,421 users chose him as their captain. Liverpool was up against Tottenham Hotspur and Salah could not get a goal or an assist in that tight fixture.

4. Mohamed Salah - 4,781,468 (GW15, 2021-22)

Mohamed Salah was the most captained player in GW15 also during the 2021-22 season. A total of 4,781,468 FPL managers gave the captaincy to the Egyptian winger, hoping he would bring a lot of points to them.

As it happened, Liverpool FC won by 1-0 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, courtesy of Divock Origi scoring the winner in the 94th minute. The assist for the goal was provided by Salah who ended the GW with just six points.

3. Mohamed Salah - 4,882,177 (GW13, 2021-22)

Mohamed Salah features again with 4,882,177 handing him the armband for the GW13 during the 2021-22 season. The Liverpool FC midfielder was in exceptional form in both home and away fixtures, leading the pack by a considerable margin.

For this particular GW, LFC was up against Southampton and despite a 4-0 win, Salah could not get on the scoresheet. He provided one assist in the game, ending with six points.

2. Mohamed Salah - 5,139,561 (GW17, 2021-22)

Mohamed Salah broke the record and became the first player to be captained by more than five million managers in a single game week. In total, 5,139,561 players in FPL gave him captaincy. 

Liverpool came up against Newcastle United at Anfield and hoped that Salah would be on the scoresheet. While the Reds won 3-1, the Egyptian winger scored the second of the three goals for the winning side. He took away eight points for his performance.

1. Erling Haaland - 5,398,620 (GW6, 2022-23)

Erling Haaland is the new record holder for being captained by the most number of managers in a single game week in the Fantasy Premier League. The Norwegian forward has taken the league by storm after scoring back-to-back hattricks in the run-up to game week six. A total of 5,398,620 managers were banking on him to deliver once again.

Manchester City played Aston Villa and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. However, it was good news for managers who gave Haaland the captaincy as he scored a goal and got nine points, including three bonus points.

The Norwegian broke his own record just 2 gameweeks later as he was captained by 6,060,549 FPL managers. Haaland did reward the managers with a goal, but he could only manage 6 points overall and did not collect any bonus points this time around.
