The La Dea’s earned a Champions League spot for the next season.
Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, fondly nicknamed “La Dea”, are a unique entity in Italian football. Hailing from Bergamo, a city nestled in the foothills of the Alps, they haven’t followed the traditional path to glory.
Unlike the giants of Milan, Turin, or Juventus, Atalanta’s trophy cabinet may not overflow with silverware, but their contents hold immense weight, a testament to their unwavering spirit and consistent fight against the odds.
Atalanta’s early years were a baptism by fire. They competed in regional leagues, laying the foundation for the club’s identity. Their relentless pursuit of success bore fruit in 1929 when they finally secured a place in the national Serie B championship.
The journey upward wasn’t smooth; promotions were often followed by relegations. However, the 1930s witnessed a period of relative stability in Serie B, culminating in their first national title – the Serie B championship in the 1939-40 season.
However, the 1960s witnessed a surge in their fortunes. Under the leadership of manager Angelo Schiavio, they secured their most coveted prize – the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) in 1963. This triumph, achieved against a formidable Torino side, remains their only major trophy to date.
The turn of the period marked a significant shift in Atalanta’s fortunes. Under a series of astute managers, including Gian Piero Gasperini, they began to establish themselves as a consistent force in Serie A.

Their attacking style of play, named “Gasperini’s Atalanta,” became a hallmark, attracting talented players and thrilling fans with their persistent attacking dynamism.
Hence the newfound stability translated into success. Atalanta secured numerous runner-up finishes in recent years – the Coppa Italia finals in 2019 and 2021, and a historic second-place finish in Serie A in the 2018-19 season.
They also became regulars in European competitions, reaching the Europa League quarterfinals on multiple occasions and even making a remarkable run to the Champions League quarterfinals in 2020.
Atalanta added their first European trophy after a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023-24 final.
