Albino Gomes has conceded 20 goals for Jamshedpur FC in his last ten matches.
Since their inception into the Indian Super League (ISL) in the 2017-18 season, Jamshedpur FC have enjoyed the privilege of having two remarkable goalkeepers who have cemented their legacies as the backbone of the club’s defensive line.
These two stalwarts have not only been the guardians of the goal but also the embodiment of reliability and leadership for the Red Miners.
This feature takes a closer look at the contributions and enduring legacies of these two goalkeeping icons, analyzing how their resilience, agility, and commanding presence helped shape Jamshedpur FC’s reputation as a competitive force. As the mantle now passes to Albino Gomes, we examine whether this new guardian has what it takes to carry the torch forward.
Will he rise to the occasion and etch his name among the greats, or will the weight of expectation be a daunting challenge? As Jamshedpur FC continues their quest for glory, all eyes will be on Albino Gomes to see if he can uphold the proud tradition of excellence left behind by his predecessors.
Subrata Paul won the Golden Glove Award in ISL 2017-18
In July 2017, Jamshedpur FC made their grand entry into the Indian Super League, creating an electrifying buzz across the Steel City. Among the roster announcements, one name stood out and made headlines: Subrata Paul, a proud alumnus of the Tata Football Academy, returning to his roots to don the Jamshedpur FC jersey.
His debut as Jamshedpur FC’s first-ever goalkeeper came against his former side, NorthEast United FC, in Guwahati. Living up to the immense expectations, Subrata delivered a stellar performance, keeping a clean sheet in his inaugural match and setting the tone for a remarkable stint with the club.
Subrata Paul’s tenure at Jamshedpur FC was marked by extraordinary achievements and fan adulation. In the club’s debut season, he etched his name in history by clinching the prestigious Indian Super League Golden Glove Award.
His consistent brilliance earned him a two-season extension, during which he became synonymous with Jamshedpur FC’s defensive solidity. Revered as the “unbreakable wall” of the team, Subrata became an instant fan favorite.
However, after a challenging 2019-20 season under Antonio Iriondo, the club underwent a massive overhaul, which saw Subrata bidding an emotional farewell to the Red Miners. His departure left a void in the hearts of fans, but his legacy as Jamshedpur FC’s first and finest custodian endures as an integral part of the club’s history.
Rehenesh TP played a crucial role in Red Miners lifting the ISL Shield.
After the disappointing 2019-20 campaign, Jamshedpur FC decided it was time to shed their reputation as a mid-table team and establish themselves as a dominant force in the Indian Super League.
The club brought in former Burnley coach Owen Coyle to spearhead this transformation, marking the end of an era for the trusted trio of Tiri, Memo, and Subrata Paul.
In their bid for reinvention, Jamshedpur FC signed Rehnesh TP as their new goalkeeper, a move that initially seemed uncertain but later proved pivotal. Rehnesh made his debut in November 2020, enduring a rough start with a 2-1 loss to Chennaiyin FC.
His early days in the Jamshedpur jersey were challenging, including a red card in only his second match. However, despite Jamshedpur missing the playoffs that season, Rehnesh emerged as a standout performer, recording 54 saves and keeping nine clean sheets, becoming a fan favorite and a key figure in the squad.
The following season, 2021-22, marked a turning point for Jamshedpur FC as Owen Coyle’s side made history by clinching their first-ever silverware, the Indian Super League League Winners’ Shield. Rehnesh TP was instrumental in this achievement, delivering consistent performances and contributing significantly to the team’s defensive strength as they outperformed heavyweights like Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC.
After four impactful seasons, Rehnesh TP bid farewell to the Red Miners at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, moving to Mumbai City FC for a new chapter in his career.
Can Albino Gomes rise to the occasion for Khalid Jamil?
Jamshedpur FC made a significant move ahead of the new Indian Super League season by signing Albino Gomes, a 30-year-old, 6’2″ goalkeeper from Nuvem, Goa. Over the years, he has built an impressive resume, featuring for Indian Super League clubs like Mumbai City FC, Delhi Dynamos FC, Odisha FC, and Kerala Blasters FC, as well as I-League sides such as Churchill Brothers and Sreenidi Deccan.
Known for his penalty-saving prowess, Albino holds the distinction of being the goalkeeper with the most penalty saves in Indian Super League history—a record that highlights his exceptional reflexes under high-pressure scenarios. This reputation, combined with his extensive experience, made him a natural choice to succeed in the legacies of Subrata Paul and Rehenesh TP at Jamshedpur FC.
However, Albino’s tenure with the Red Miners has started on a challenging note. In the seven ISL matches he has played for Jamshedpur FC this season, Albino has managed just one clean sheet, which has raised questions about his performance and the team’s defensive solidity.
Despite making 32 saves and showcasing decent passing accuracy, his tenure has been marred by defensive lapses that have seen the team concede 16 goals, including back-to-back heavy defeats where they allowed five goals in each match. Albino’s struggles have not been limited to the league.
In the Durand Cup, he achieved only one clean sheet during Jamshedpur’s opener against Assam Rifles. The pressure culminated in Albino being subbed off late in their recent match against Chennaiyin FC, with local talent Amrit Gope stepping in to take his place.
The coming weeks will be crucial for Albino as he seeks redemption and aims to prove that he can uphold the legacy of goalkeeping excellence at Jamshedpur FC. Whether he can rise to the challenge and help steer his team back to form will be a storyline worth following.
