Jamshedpur FC conceded five goals per game in their last two back-to-back matches.
Jamshedpur FC have enjoyed their best-ever start to an Indian Super League (ISL) season in the current campaign, marking a significant milestone for the Red Miners since their inception into India’s top-flight football in the 2017-18 season.
This strong start has fueled excitement and optimism among their fanbase, who have watched the team oscillate between mid-table finishes and unsatisfactory campaigns in recent years.
However, despite this promising opening, the team recently suffered two heavy back-to-back defeats, drawing attention to certain vulnerabilities that have resurfaced. In this feature, we delve into some of the heaviest defeats Jamshedpur FC have endured over their seven ISL seasons.
Interestingly, two of these top-five defeats have come from their last two matches alone, illustrating both the highs and lows of their ongoing season. This list serves as a reminder of the challenges Jamshedpur FC have faced historically and underscores the resilience they will need to maintain as they navigate the rest of the season.
5. Chennaiyin FC 4-1 Jamshedpur FC (ISL 2019-20)
In January 2020, Jamshedpur FC endured one of their heaviest defeats in the Indian Super League, falling to Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. It was a challenging season under head coach Antonio Iriondo, as the Red Miners were already struggling to find consistency. Meanwhile, Chennaiyin FC, under the guidance of debutant coach Owen Coyle, had begun to build momentum after a slow start, making them formidable opponents.
The match began with an early breakthrough when Nerijus Valskis put Chennaiyin FC ahead in the 13th minute. As the first half progressed, Andre Schembri doubled the lead, giving the Marina Machans a comfortable two-goal cushion by halftime.
Jamshedpur FC showed signs of life when Sergio Castel pulled one back in the 71st minute, but their hopes were short-lived. Just three minutes later, Valskis struck again, restoring Chennaiyin’s two-goal lead.
Lallianzuala Chhangte added the final blow in the 87th minute, sealing a 4-1 win for Chennaiyin. This defeat was one of the most crushing losses Jamshedpur FC has faced in Chennai, a blow that derailed their campaign and contributed to one of the team’s poorest ISL seasons.
4. Odisha FC 4-1 Jamshedpur FC (ISL 2023-24)
Another striking aspect of Jamshedpur FC’s difficult run has been the concentration of heavy defeats in a short span of less than a year. One such loss came against Odisha FC and ultimately marked the end of Scott Cooper’s tenure as Jamshedpur’s head coach. Following this crushing defeat, JFC made the unprecedented decision to part ways with Cooper mid-season, the first time in their history that they’d sacked a coach during a campaign.
It was a tough start to the season for Jamshedpur, and facing a formidable Odisha FC under Sergio Lobera’s leadership added to the challenge. In a match that began on a promising note, Rei Tachikawa gave JFC an early lead, breaking the deadlock.
However, their joy was short-lived. Isak Vanlalruatfela equalized for Odisha in the 27th minute, and from there, Odisha launched an offensive onslaught. Within just 20 minutes, Odisha FC netted three more goals.
Roy Krishna’s strike in the 36th minute put them ahead, followed by Diego Mauricio’s conversion from the penalty spot, and Krishna’s second goal added to Jamshedpur’s misery.
The defeat, taking place at Odisha’s Kalinga Stadium, stands as one of the most humiliating in Jamshedpur FC’s history, a painful memory for fans and a harsh reminder of the challenges the team faced under Cooper’s tenure. The result intensified JFC’s struggles, making it a difficult season for both the team and its supporters.
3. Jamshedpur FC 1-5 Chennaiyin FC (ISL 2024-25)
In their latest Indian Super League outing, Jamshedpur FC endured a devastating defeat, this time compounded by the sting of happening on their home turf, with fans hoping for an electrifying display from the Red Miners.
Fate, however, dealt them a painful blow, as their opponents, led by none other than Owen Coyle and Chennaiyin FC, handed Jamshedpur one of their heaviest losses, echoing a past heartbreak that Coyle’s Chennaiyin had once inflicted.

The match unraveled quickly, beginning with an unfortunate own goal by Pratik Chaudhary in just the 6th minute. From that point, Chennaiyin FC took full control, with Irfan Yadwad doubling the lead. Connor Shields, Wilmar Jordan Gill, and Lukas Brambilla added to the tally, each goal deepening the wound and showcasing Chennaiyin’s relentless prowess on the field.
Despite the grim scoreboard, Jamshedpur FC captain Javier Hernandez managed to offer a glimmer of consolation to the disheartened home crowd, converting a penalty in the 81st minute to prevent a complete shutout. Following a heavy defeat to NorthEast United FC in their previous game, this match underscored Jamshedpur’s current struggles, leaving fans yearning for a turnaround and a return to form.
2. Jamshedpur FC 0-5 FC Goa (ISL 2019-20)
An intriguing aspect of Jamshedpur FC’s history of heavy defeats is that two of their top five losses were under Khalid Jamil, while two others occurred during Antonio Iriondo’s tenure. Among these, one particularly memorable defeat unfolded in 2020, as Jamshedpur faced FC Goa in what was set to be their final home match of the campaign.
FC Goa had everything at stake, standing on the brink of a historic accomplishment: claiming the inaugural ISL Shield and becoming the first ISL team to secure a spot in the AFC Champions League. Seizing this golden opportunity, FC Goa, led by Clifford Miranda, launched a relentless goal-scoring spree.
The prolific Ferran Corominas set the tone by finding the net, followed by goals from Jackichand Singh, Mourtada Fall, and Hugo Boumous, who would later win the ISL Golden Ball for the 2019-20 season. The resounding victory not only solidified FC Goa’s status as a dominant force but also etched their name in history as the first team to clinch the ISL Shield.
1. NorthEast United FC 5-0 Jamshedpur FC (ISL 2024-25)
Jamshedpur FC recently suffered their heaviest defeat in Indian Super League history during an away clash against NorthEast United FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati. The Highlanders took control early, with Moroccan forward Ajaraie opening the scoring.
Jamshedpur’s challenge grew steeper when Nigerian center-back Stephen Eze received a red card in the 30th minute, leaving them down to 10 men for the remaining hour of play. NorthEast United seized the advantage, with Parthiv Gogoi and Nickson propelling an unrelenting goal-scoring spree.
In one of their most dominant performances, NorthEast United registered 27 shots, with eight on target, leaving Jamshedpur FC fans to endure a painful loss as the Highlanders capitalized on nearly every opportunity. This encounter not only highlighted Jamshedpur’s defensive vulnerabilities but also underscored NorthEast United’s attacking prowess and relentless pressure.
