The Indian U17 Women’s National Team are set to continue their SAFF U17 Women’s Championship campaign against Bhutan at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan, on Friday, August 24th. The Young Tigresses started the campaign strongly, defeating Nepal 7-0 and Bangladesh 2-0 in their opening fixtures.

There has been a change in the format of the tournament, where all four teams—India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh — will play each other twice in a double round-robin format. The team with the most points after their six matches will be crowned champions.

India are being coached by Joakin Alexandersson, under whom the U20S recently achieved qualification for the AFC Asian Cup. He seems to be working his magic again, this time in the Bhutan capital as India aims for a record third SAFF U17 Women’s Championship. The Blue Tigresses last won the tournament in 2019.

India and Bhutan have had contrasting starts

Bhutan have slumped to two losses in their first two matches. The first came against Bangladesh, who ousted them 3-1 courtesy of goals from Prity and a brace from Akter. Choden’s 61st-minute strike only proved to be a consolation for the Dragons.

Nepal dealt another blow to their hopes of a first point with a 2-1 loss. Limbu’s brace for Nepal took them over the line despite Tshogyal’s solitary goal for Bhutan. India, on the other hand, extended their goal difference with their 2-0 win over the Bangla Tigresses, with goals from Pearl Fernandes and Bonifilia Shullai.

Bhutan are the only team among the four not to have won the tournament before, finishing third on 3 occasions. India has won twice, both times on Bhutanese soil and will be looking to replicate their fortunes.

India U17 Women’s team’s opener at the SAFF U17 Women’s Championship will be held on Friday, August 24th, 2025, at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan, at 2:30 PM IST. The match will be streamed live on the Sportzworkz YouTube Channel.
