Real Madrid have been one of the biggest spenders in world football.

Real Madrid sealed one of the biggest transfers of the summer window, signing Ivorian winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig. The 19-year-old attacker, who was a target for both Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, has signed a seven-year contract at Estadio Bernabeu for an initial fee of €125 million. It can rise to €140 million with further add-ons.

As it stands, Diomande has become one of the most expensive signings in football history. Outside the financial might of Premier League clubs, Real Madrid have been one of the biggest spenders. They have secured big-money deals over the years for Jude Bellingham, Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale, and more.

Boasting one of the largest fan bases in the world and a brilliant academy, Los Blancos have been able to break the bank to secure their targets, often blowing their competitors out of the water. While other big clubs like Barcelona and Bayern Munich have struggled in this aspect, Madrid remain a favourite destination for big-money signings.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo – €94 million

Cristiano Ronaldo was the poster boy of Florentino Perez’s ‘Galactico’ era, with the Portuguese superstar arriving from Manchester United for €94 million. It was, by some distance, the world-record transfer fee, overshadowing the €73 million that Madrid paid for Zinedine Zidane.

With 450 goals in 438 competitive appearances and four Ballon d’Ors, it is safe to say the move was successful.

4. Gareth Bale – €101 million

Gareth Bale arrived from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of €101 million, making him the most expensive British transfer of all time. The Welsh winger formed the famed BBC front trio with Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, winning five UEFA Champions League titles.

Despite a rather sour ending, with Bale’s interest in golf overshadowing his Madrid career, the winger had a fruitful stay in Spain. Overall, he won 13 major trophies, scoring 106 goals in 258 appearances.

3. Eden Hazard – €120.8 million

Real Madrid rarely make a wrong move in the transfer market. But Eden Hazard is quite possibly one of the worst signings in football history. Despite lighting up the English Premier League in seven seasons with Chelsea, Hazard failed to settle down in Spain.

Injuries meant that he rarely got an extended run in the team, scoring just seven goals in 76 appearances. He eventually had his contract terminated in 2023 before announcing his retirement shortly thereafter.

2. Yan Diomande – €125 million

Diomande’s move to Madrid is worth an initial €125 million, making him the second-most expensive signing in the club’s history. However, if he hits all the add-ons, he will become the most expensive Real Madrid signing of all time.

He is Los Blancos’ fourth purchase of the 2026 summer window, following the signings of Marc Cucurella (€55m), Carlos Espai (€20m), and Denzel Dumfries (€20m).

Jude Bellingham’s 2023 transfer from Borussia Dortmund remains the most expensive signing in Los Blancos’ history. The England midfielder was signed for an initial fee of €103 million, which rose to €127 million with add-ons.

Despite the hefty fee, Bellingham has been an overwhelming success in Madrid. He helped his side win LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League in his debut season, scoring 23 goals and registering 13 assists.

Who is Real Madrid’s most expensive signing?

Jude Bellingham tops the list, costing €127m after add‑ons from Borussia Dortmund in 2023.

How much did Real Madrid pay for Yan Diomande?
