Newcastle United 1-3 Everton: Five key takeaways from pre-season friendly

The Toffees thrashed the Magpies in tonight’s friendly.
Newcastle United took on Everton in an exciting pre-season friendly fixture at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. A superb first-half performance sealed a 3-1 win for the Toffees.
Thierno Barry opened the scoring in the 27th minute, putting the Toffees in charge of the match. Joelinton then fouled Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall inside the penalty area, and Iliman Ndiaye doubled the lead from the spot in the 36th minute.
Newcastle started the second half well, but the Toffees’ backline was on song to deny their attackers any sniff at Mark Travers’ goal. Everton struck late in the match, with Tyrique George finding the back of the net in the 73rd minute to round up a solid victory.
Harvey Barnes pulled one back for the Magpies in the 85th minute, although it proved to be too little, too late.
Important things we learned from Newcastle United vs Everton:
1. Everton midfield looks light
Ahead of the new Premier League season, David Moyes signed four new players to bolster the Toffees squad. Among those were two midfielders: Hayden Hackney, who joined from Middlesbrough for £17m, and Christian Norgaard, who joined from Arsenal for £6.9m.
Norgaard is still some way away from 100% match fitness, but Hackney did start in tonight’s game. Overall, he put in a solid if unspectacular performance in the middle of the park. His partners, Harrison Armstrong and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, were much more impactful.
However, midfield still looks like a weak spot for the Toffees, with the team having lost both Idrissa Gana Gueye and Jack Grealish over the summer. At least one more signing would be key for them to seriously challenge for the top half of the league.
2. Barry stakes starting claim
Thierno Barry has had his share of troubles since moving to England. The French striker found it difficult to score at the start of last season, but hit a rich vein of form towards the end, finishing the season with eight goals. Still, Moyes largely rotated between him and Beto up top.
Barry scored the opening goal in tonight’s match. It was a fine counter-attacking move from the Toffees, with Barry confidently firing the ball into the bottom corner, giving Lukas Horincek no chance of saving it.
3. Travers deputises well
For a long time, Jordan Pickford has been the undisputed No. 1 for club and country. The 32-year-old has been superb between the sticks for Everton, but the club has struggled to find an able backup. They have been lucky in that Pickford has only missed nine matches in as many seasons for the Toffees.
However, Mark Travers had a wonderful outing in tonight’s friendly. The Irish goalkeeper, signed last season from Bournemouth for an initial fee of £4 million, made several decent saves to deny the Newcastle forwards.

4. Bruno Guimaraes exit hurting Newcastle
The loss of Bruno Guimaraes, the talismanic midfielder and skipper for the Magpies, was extremely evident in tonight’s match. Joelinton and new signing Aladji Bamba started in the middle of the park. Both were substituted at half-time. Bamba completed just 23 passes, while Joelinton had a proper nightmare, giving away a penalty that Ndiaye converted.
5. The Magpies fire blanks
Newcastle have had a tough summer so far, but few would have expected them to capitulate as they did tonight. The Magpies had five shots but failed to seriously trouble their opponents. William Osula and Yoane Wissa had anonymous performances, while their half-time replacements, Joe Willock and Nick Woltemade, failed to leave a mark. The only goal was scored by Harvey Barnes, but it proved to be little more than a consolation.
